Anna Williams is a fictional character featured in the Tekken fighting game series. She is trained in bone breaking martial arts (koppou) and aikido, and she almost always appears in her trademark red silk dress and/or a blue version of it. In her early twenties, with a flirtatious demeanour and seductive laugh, she is something of a femme fatale. As a child, she loved her father as much as her sister, Nina, did, but Anna didn't get as much attention from him. Therefore, she was closer to her mother, a female national Aikido champion. Because of this, her fighting style leans more towards her mother's Aikido style than her father's assassin Bone Martial Arts. Anna has a memorable sibling rivalry and a somewhat love-hate relationship with her older sister, Nina, which spawned from the death of their father, Richard Williams.

History

Tekken 1

Anna was featured in Nina's Arcade mode ending, in which she accuses Nina of stealing one of her shoes (See Nina's Tekken ending). She was also featured as Nina's sub-boss in Tekken 1, but did not become a useable character until the console version of the game. Anna, like all of the other sub-bosses in the first Tekken game, was not given an ending.

Tekken 2

As in the first tournament, Nina was once again hired to assassinate the sponsor of the current tournament, Kazuya Mishima. Whether at Kazuya's discretion or Anna's own volition, Anna became a bodyguard for Kazuya, along with Ganryu and Bruce Irvin, who were all charged with Kazuya's protection. It is likely that Anna's intervention prevented her sister from carrying out her contract, and Nina was later captured by Mishima Zaibatsu forces and used in Doctor Boskonovitch's cryonics ('cold-sleep') research. Learning about this, Anna volunteered to be another test subject, requesting that she be woken in the future at the same time as Nina. Her reasons for doing so remain ambiguous, though the suggestion that Anna would have felt lonely without Nina and/or jealous at the thought of her sister's youth being preserved are both likely.

Tekken 3

After being placed in suspended animation during the second tournament, Nina was awoken 19 years later by the influence of the recently excavated Ogre, who compelled her to assassinate Jin Kazama. As per her request, Anna was awoken at the same time as her sister, though she was unaffected by Ogre's influence. Nina also began to suffer ill effects from the 'cold-sleep', resulting in long term memory loss. In an act of compassion, Anna set out to stop Nina from once again becoming an assassin, and to help her recover her past.

Tekken 4

In Tekken 4, Anna is mysteriously and inexplicably absent, though she is mentioned in Nina's Tekken 4 prologue and returns in Tekken 5.

Tekken 5

Nina decides to make contact with Anna in hopes of restoring her memory. Unfortunately, their meeting serves only to trigger Nina's lost feelings of hostility towards her sister, and she immediately opens fire. Anna retaliates, and the reunion descends into a gunfight which lasts for days. The sisters eventually reach a stalemate and agree to settle things for good at The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5. A portion of their gunfight can be seen in the introductory sequence of the game.

Tekken: The Animated Movie

In the animated movie, Nina and Anna are Lee Chaolan's "girlfriends". Nina also pronounces her name "Aun-Na", suggesting that her name would not be pronounced like the North American "Anna" (though it should be noted that the animated movie was notorious for mispronouncing character names). The animated movie storyline diverges from the original one; in it, Anna enters Tekken to finish her sister off without any feelings of compassion whatsoever, and is brutally attacked by a test subject that Lee sets free. The animated movie also states that it was Anna who killed her own father, Richard Williams, because she grew mad with bitterness over him always treating Nina better than her; in the original storyline, it was never stated who killed Richard Williams, and it is implied that both sisters loved their father and blame each other for responsibility for his death, but not literally killing him.

Death by Degrees

In the Tekken spin-off game, Death By Degrees, Anna is a member of the Tekken Force, the Mishima Zaibatsu's military wing, whilst Nina, the player's character, is working as part of a joint operation between the CIA and MI6. She is twice a boss in this game, when she turns up to stop Nina. Once the game is completed, Anna becomes a playable character in her own mini-game, "Anna Mode."

Endings

Tekken 2

After competing in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, Anna goes back home to Ireland. She is seen taking a hot, relaxing shower. However, as soon as she steps out of the cubicle, naked, Nina (who was lurking nearby) steps out in front of Anna. With Nina raising a camera in front of her, a startled Anna can only watch as the flash goes off. Nina holds up the Polaroid picture and waves it at her sister. However, it fortunately reveals that Anna was able to maintain some of her dignity by covering herself with her arms.

Tekken 3

  • Note: Two versions of this ending exist; one for the Japanese and European versions of the game, and another that was used in the American release.
Japanese Version: Nina and Anna relax by the beach. A group of men begin to flirt with the sisters. While Nina appears to ignore their advances, she glances towards Anna, who is talking animatedly with two of them. A third man tries to pull Nina from her sun lounger, but she instead pulls her arm from his grip and walks up behind her distracted sister. Nina quickly unclasps the upper half of Anna's bikini, which flies off and leaves her looking mortified. While Anna tries, in a panic, to cover herself, Nina saunters off towards the camera, looking satisfied.
Edited Version: The sisters are once again seen relaxing in the sun. The ending proceeds similarly to the Japanese version, but after Anna is seen conversing with the men, she simply walks off, with them in tow, leaving a lonely Nina.

Tekken Tag Tournament

Anna Williams and Nina Williams are having a conversation in an area that looks similar to Nina Williams' first Tekken Tag Tournament arena. Suddenly, Anna holds out one of her arms for a handshake. Nina sighs and grabs Anna's hand. Instead of them shaking hands, Nina twists Anna's arm. A closeup of Anna's face while she's screaming in agony is show before this ending video ends. The same situation is applied for Nina's ending except they switch places, but in the end Nina still twists Anna's arm.

Tekken 5

Nina and Anna are hired to take part in a big Hollywood movie. They have a short, sword fighting sequence on a rooftop before facing off for the final blow. Lightening flashes and the sisters slice past one another. After a few seconds Nina emerges as the victor as Anna collapses to the ground. The director yells "Cut!" before beginning to complain that Nina isn't following the script. As he berates Nina, her armour begins to fall apart, and she desperately tries to hold it together. Anna rises from the ground and begins to laugh at Nina's humiliation. In Nina's version she follows the script and falls to the ground defeated, but once the movie crew starts congradulating Anna on her performance Nina walks off to a safe distance where she presses a button on a remote control that activates an explosion where Anna and the crew are.

Trivia

  • Anna's sub-bosses are Lee Chaolan and Nina Williams.
  • Anna is most notable for the stylish outfits she wears in matches. Usually, she's shown wearing a modified qipao with matching gloves and shoes, and she keeps her hair well-coiffed and cut to the neckline.
  • In Tekken, Tekken 2 (during gameplay only), and the Tekken anime, Anna has black hair. In all other games, her hair is brown.
  • One of Anna's alternate costumes, a black and white zebra-stripe outfit, first seen in Tekken 3, was not included in Tekken games after Tekken Tag Tournament by request of PETA, who believed that the outfit promoted the wearing of fur.
