Introduction

Devil Jin is a character in The Tekken fighting game series. He is, in a simple term, Jin Kazama after he succumbed to the effects of his Devil Gene. Though he first appeared in Tekken 3 (through Jin's ending), Devil Jin first debuted as a playable character in 2005's Tekken 5. Perhaps the Ultimate in all that is evil, Devil Jin is, as earlier stated, Jin Kazama after he succumbed to the effects of his Devil Gene moments after defeating both his father Kazuya Mishima and his grandfather Heihachi Mishima during the closing events of Tekken 4. As Devil Jin, evil has completely taken over Jin, and all Jin ever thinks about is making himself a more powerful form than before. While he is obviously evil, he has no listed enemies (apart from Jinpachi, whom he wishes to kill and absorb his devil gene) nor does he even bother attacking and trying to kill his father and grandfather. He doesn't even bother attacking Hwoarang at all (apart from Hwoarang's ending, in which Devil Jin does attack him; but because Hwoarang's ending is not canon to Tekken 5 it is unlikely that they met at all).

Like his father, Jin only lusts for more power. His only goal is to defeat Jinpachi and take his Devil Gene; evidence shows that because Jinpachi's awakening triggered Jin's devil gene, it is possible that Devil Jin heavily attracted by his grandfather's presence and wishes to track him down - sensing that he is in possession of great power.

Behind The Evil Of Jin

Though Jin's devil self made it's official debut in Tekken 5, he first appeared in Tekken 3. After defeating True Ogre (Ogre in his perfect form) in the final round of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3, Jin was suddenly attacked by Heihachi's Tekken Force and was shot mulitple times. Jin slowly succumbed to death, yet as he tried to call for help, his grandfather shot him in the head with his pistol, thus effectively killing Jin. However, when Heihachi turned his back and walked away, he saw the bodies of his Tekken force before him, and quickly turned around to see Jin in his Devil form. Angered by betrayal, Devil Jin grabbed Heihachi and slammed him through a stone wall and violently hurled him into the ground before flying off into the night.

It would be two years since the events of the Third Tournament and Heihachi had not seen or heard from his grandson ever since. He couldn't even track him down. Jin was actually in Brisbane, Australia - living a new life there, and training under the guidance of a dojo master in the traditional art of Karate. During this time, the results of the Iron Fist Tournament 3 came in claiming Jin as the official champion; but Jin did not wish to be indentifed as this, hence why he wore his hooded jacket. While Jin was undoing what he learned from his grandfather and trained intensively in the art of Traditional Karate, he was able to supress his Devil Gene also. For one, he didn't want to establish any close relationships with anyone other than the Dojo Grandmaster, for concern of their safety should they figure out his dark secret and he tried to control his anger (since the Devil Gene is usually triggered off with anger). This wasn't an easy task as the stinging memory of his grandfather's betrayal often enraged Jin, yet Jin worked hard at it. For two years straight, it seemed that Jin was able to compress his Devil Gene once and for all.

Or so it seemed...

After two years of silence, Jin entered the King Of Iron Fist Tournament 4, with the intention of destroying his evil bloodline by murdering his grandfather and father (it is unknown how he knew his father was alive) and then himself. During the tournament, Jin was captured by Heihachi's Tekken Forces and was held captive in Honmaru. In other events, Heihachi had defeated Kazuya in the tournament then lead him to Jin. When they arrive, after a brief conversation, Kazuya uses some of his supernatual power to knock Heihachi out of the room, where he watched what happened afterwards with great interest.

In Jin's dream, he was challenged by his father to "give in to the anger", in an attempt to unleash his devil gene (in which Kazuya wanted himself). Jin broke free and violently attacked his father, knocking him unconcious. Heihachi then challenged Jin to a fight himself, in which Jin angrily accepted. Jin then defeated Heihachi and proceeded to kill him, which then began to unleash his devil gene even further. However, a vision of his mother Jun prevented Jin from killing Heihachi, which then lead to the sparing of Heihachi and Kazuya's lives and Jin taking off once more.

Moments later, Honmaru was under attack by Jacks and was ultimately destroyed by an explosion, which unleashed Jinpachi Mishima; whom was in his devil form also. This would trigger Jin's own devil gene and became uncontrolable, leading to the destruction of a forest. The Devil Gene was in full effect and completely took over Jin, despite trying to battle it's influence.

Two months later, evil completely uttered Jin's mind and Devil Jin was born- in which he became the ultimate and destructable evil life form. He set himself an evil task: Find and kill Jinpachi and absorb his devil gene.

Trivia

  • Devil Jin can be unlocked in three ways in the Playstation 2 version of the game: You can complete the "Devil Within" minigame, or you can play 200 games in Arcade mode. Also you can unlock all characters and beat story mode with all of them.
  • Devil Jin is considered to be a popular character amongst fans - prehaps even better than the original Devil form of Kazuya.
  • Devil Jin's black wings take a featherey-bird/angel form. This was rumored that Jin may have a good side despite being completely evil in his devil form. This also suggests that Angel may be within Jin, fighting his evil influence from Devil (much like how she did with Kazuya). However, it is not confirmed whether or not this is true.
  • Jin's main quote as Devil Jin is "Kyoufu wo oshiete yarou!", which translates to "I will show you the meaning of fear ". Other mannerisms (upon victory) show Devil Jin lifting his opponent up by using telekenisis (only seen in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection), absorbing energy into his wrist, shooting a laser towards the sky while a lot of energy appears in front of his body, and evilly laughing.
  • It is interesting to note that while Jin spent two years unlearning his original fighting style (Advanced Mishima-Style Karate) in favour for Traditional Karate, he maintains his former fighting style while in his devil form. Another strange finding with Jin is his attire: his colours while in his normal state are black with a white flame, and he wears footpads (he fights bare-foot), whereas his devil form is a remixed version of his original colours: Black-leather like pants with a red flame, and this time he's wearing boots (only one is red and the other is black). No official explaination has been given to demonstrate this, although one would think that the two Jin's were given different attires to not only seperate the two characters but to also demonstrate their uniqueness- esspecially in Devil Jin's case.
  • According to Asuka Kazama's ending, she can undo Jin's Devil self by simply touching him. Also, in Asuka's ending, when Jin awoke in his normal state, he had no idea where he was or what he was doing (in which demonstrated his loss for awareness). This must mean that as Devil Jin, Jin has no awareness of what he is actually doing. Some may say that Devil Jin is actually Devil in the disguise of Jin (compared to Kazuya, Kazuya was completely conscious in his devil form whereas Jin isn't).
  • Devil Jin is the sub-boss for nearly every character in Tekken 5's "Story Mode". The exceptions are Jin Kazama, Himself (Devil Jin), Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi Mishima, Asuka Kazama, Raven, Hwoarang and Wang Jinrei.
  • In Devil Jin's ending, before Devil Jin absorbs Jinpachi's power, Devil Jin is shown wearing chains (one on one of his arms and one around his waist), but when Devil Jin breaks both of his gauntlets, these chains are gone.

Tekken 5 Devil Jin
Tekken 5 Devil Jin

Jin, overcome by the devil gene.

Ending Animation

It is not known whether or not this ending is canon, but it is presumed to be non-canon. If this ending is canon, Devil Jin might be the boss character in Tekken 6.

Devil Jin accomplishes his goal in defeating Jinpachi. Then, Devil Jin picks Jinpachi's body up and absorbs Jinpachi's demonic power. He then mutates into the ultimate evil form ever imaginable.

Devil Jin also appeared in Hwoarang's ending in Tekken 5 (Whether it is canon or not is unknown). In Hwoarang's ending, he manages to defeat Jin and is seen riding on his motorcyle on a Korean freeway. While riding, he runs into Devil Jin, who uses telekinesis to destroy his motorcycle, and a fight between the two occurs afterwards(unfortunately, the screen cuts after Hwoarang is seen smirking).
