[edit] Introduction

Ling Xiaoyu is a character in the Tekken series. Xiaoyu was introduced in Tekken 3 and has returned in every subsequent release.

Ling Xiaoyu, born and raised in China, is a student at Mishima High School. Ling Xiaoyu is also a schoolmate of Jin Kazama. In The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, Xiaoyu (or Xiao, a nickname given by her peers) wished to be reunited with Jin.

Xiaoyu's fighting style was brought on with some influence from her distant relative, Wang Jinrei. Mastering her fighting style would require a constant flexibility (Ex. Art of the Phoenix, Phoenix Talon, Mistrust, Front/Back Layout) and maneuvering.

[edit] Trivia

  • Xiaoyu's name is written as 凌 暁雨 (Ling Xiaoyu), using the Chinese characters for surpass(凌), dawn(暁), and rain(雨).
  • Ling Xiaoyu's bosses in the Tekken Force side game in Tekken 3 are (in order of appearance) Lei Wulong, Kuma, Jin Kazama, and Heihachi Mishima.
  • Ling Xiaoyu's sub-boss in Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is Jin Kazama.
  • Ling's Tekken 3 and Tekken 5 endings are the only ones that use a mix of animation and CGI.
  • In Tekken 3, Xiaoyu's school uniform can be used after playing as her 50 times and then by selecting her with the start button. This also works with Jin Kazama.
  • In Tekken 4, after beating story mode with Xiaoyu, her alternate costume becomes available by pressing triangle.
  • In Tekken 5, Xiaoyu's school girl costume can be chosen by pressing either the "L1" button or the "R1" button. Also, while wearing this costume, pressing and holding down the triangle and square buttons at the same time after winning a fight will allow you to see her secret win pose (she places her hands on her hips and says, "I'm pretty strong, you know!"). In Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, this winpose can be done in any costume without having to hold down triangle or square. Also the camera angle has been changed so that instead of showing from her knees up in Tekken 5, it show's from her waist up.
  • There is a magazine with Xiaoyu on the cover in the prison from Death by Degrees.
  • A Maxim model named Krystle starred as Ling Xiaoyu in the Tekken Maxim Photoshoot for the Maxim magazine.
  • Ling Xiaoyu is an unlockable character in Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament 2.
  • In Tekken 5, Xiaoyu can be customized to look vaguely like Street Fighter's Chun Li. These two characters are also very similar, in that they are both Chinese, have similar styles, wear wrist bands, and have their hair in two (Xiaoyu having pigtails and Chun Li having buns). Xiaoyu also has moves that may resemble Chun-Li. In Phoenix, pressing 3+4 does a move called Phoenix Talon, which resembles Chun-Li's Vertical Spin Kick in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, does a move called Birds Flock, which resembles a projectile-less Kikouken from Street Fighter 3 and Kikoushou hyper combo, and has a flipping axe kick called Crescent Moon Kick which resembles Chun-Li's Senen Shuu and Hazan Shuu. Xiaoyu's f,F+3+4, called the Front Layout, also is a flipping kick that resembles Chun-Li's Kaku Kyaku Raku.
  • Ling Xiaoyu's "Item Move" feature in Tekken 6 is mounting her opponent's shoulders and clawing at their face while wearing a pair of neko gloves, and she strikes a pose afterwards. The command for this move is "b+2+3" ([1], [2], and [3]).
  • Chiaki Kuriyama will portray Ling Xiaoyu in the upcoming 2009 movie of Tekken.
  • In the new console / NOVO trailer for Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, Xiaoyu is shown standing in a subway train while holding a mobile phone. Here, she's wearing her school uniform ([4]).

Ling was a junior at Mishima High School. She still lived, studied and trained as a ward of the Mishima Zaibatsu. But lacking any particular goals, Ling grew tired of her everyday routines.

However, one day, she received an anonymous e-mail that warned her of Heihachi’s evil intentions and the danger to her life. Ling replied to the e-mail, but she did not receive any further messages from the anonymous individual.

Ling’s intuition told her that Jin, who had been missing since the last Tournament, could have sent the message. She believed the message and started to suspect Heihachi and the Mishima Zaibatsu.

Upon hearing the announcement of the next Tournament, Ling made the decision to enter — hoping to be reunited with Jin and to unveil the truth behind Heihachi and the Mishima Zaibatsu.

[edit] Tekken 5 Manual Version

Xiaoyu cried when she heard Heihachi had been killed. In her sorrow, she wished she could go back in time. One day, Xiaoyu met a self-proclaimed genius who boasted he could invent a time machine if only he had the money. To fund the invention, Xiaoyu decided to enter the tournament.

[edit] Official Version

Ling is a high school student who is on a personal mission to save the Mishima family.

In the previous tournament, Ling was saved from the evil plans of Heihachi by Yoshimitsu, who taught her the history of the Mishima family. Hearing this, Ling began to believe that the root of all misfortune surrounding the Mishimas started with Heihachi's cruel upbringing of Kazuya.

When Ling heard of the death of Heihachi, a tear came to her eye. "If only I could turn back time..." Ling said with a hint of sadness and regret.

Later, Ling happens to meet a brilliant scientist who claims that he can make a time machine as long as he gets the funding for development.

Under the condition that she will be first to use the machine, Ling pulls out the wadded scrap of paper in her pocket... an invitation to the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5.

[edit] Interludes

Stage 4: Jin Kazama

Xiaoyu finds Jin and he warns her that the tournament is dangerous and that time cannot be reversed. Xiaoyu refuses and defeats Jin with the promise to reverse time.

Final Stage: Jinpachi Mishima

Xiaoyu faces Jinpachi while going over the prize money and time machine. After she wins, Jinpachi thanks her, and Xiaoyu is confused about who should she get the prize money from.

[edit] Ending Animation

After winning the tournament, Ling Xiaoyu is the first to use her time machine. She travels back to the time when Heihachi was about to throw Kazuya Mishima off of a cliff, intending to avert this event that will rip the family apart. Unfortunately, Xiaoyu had lost control of the time machine and it barreled into Heihachi and Kazuya, sending Kazuya falling off of the cliff, while Heihachi is nearly sent over himself. Xiaoyu is miserable because of her failure, and the old scientist comes to her, laughing, and tells her that nobody can really change the past. “The best you can hope for are minor improvements.”
