Introduction
Jun Kazama 風間準) is a character from the Tekken Series who is currently labeled as missing. Jun was introduced in Tekken 2, and returned for Tekken Tag Tournament, even though this game is non-canonical. She is the mother of Jin Kazama. It was confirmed in the Tekken 6 storyline that she was attacked and killed by Ogre before Tekken 3, though many fans argue that this is only in Jin's perspective. Ogre has some of her moves, like her "Windmill Kick" move. Jin, seeking to avenge his mother, kills True Ogre in The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3. Jin now wants to get his second revenge by killing Ogre.
The Jun Kazama/Unknown Controversy
The final boss of Tekken Tag Tournament is a character that is referred to as "Unknown". Unknown is an Asian-looking woman with glowing yellow eyes and purple slime coating her otherwise naked body. Behind her, some sort of wolf-like spirit acts out every move she performs, giving the impression that it is controlling her actions. Unknown has the ability to copy all of the other characters' abilities, and the player can switch fighting styles on the fly simply by pressing down on the Right analog stick. What's interesting to note, however, is that Unknown starts with the fighting style of Jun Kazama at the onset of every battle. This, in addition to their similar features, have led many to believe that Unknown is a possessed Jun Kazama. However, as Namco has not commented, nor featured Unknown in any subsequent Tekken games, this remains a heated controversy amongst fans.
Parallelism to Asuka Kazama
Another interesting fact is that Jun seems to be completely replaced by a recent addition to the series named Asuka Kazama (cousin of Jin Kazama), both in terms of gameplay (they have the same moves, but Asuka has more moves than Jun). Asuka first appeared in Tekken 5. In previous Tekken games, Jun Kazama possessed strange angelic powers that allowed her to temporarily quell evil entities (such as the Devil which possessed Jin Kazama and, possibly, Kazuya Mishima).
Similarly, in her ending in Tekken 5, Asuka manages to reverse Jin Kazama's Devil transformation simply by touching him. She did not seem to be aware of this power, however, nor did she seem to notice Jin's transformed state at all. At the end of their encounter, Jin accidentally fell face-first onto Asuka's breasts and, after a momentary look of embarrassment, Asuka retaliated by punching him into a wall of rock and stomping away angrily, never finding out about their relation.
What's interesting is that, if Asuka does not know about her power (or her relation to Jin), then it's possible that not everyone with Kazama blood know they have this ability. Jun seemed to be able to sense the Devil within Kazuya Mishima (Jin's father), but Asuka has yet to show no such extraordinary sense, despite there being four individuals within the last two King Of Iron Fist Tournaments 5 and 6 who possessed the Devil Gene (Kazuya Mishima, Jin Kazama, Jinpachi Mishima) and Azazel. however it can be assume that asuka lack purity unlike Jun which may allow her have more access to this spiritual ability to sense out evil energy such as the devil gene.
This may be attributed to several factors:
- Asuka's age, as she is five years younger than Jun was when she appeared in Tekken 2.
- Jun's title of "Chosen One" (which made her special even amongst other Kazamas, as stated in her Tekken 2 profile).
- Asuka has a "less-than-pure" behaviour, while Jun was peace-loving and mostly pacifistic, Asuka is eager to get into a fight.
Trivia
General
- Jun is considered a character who is a peace-lover (like an Angel), and which has inner and outer beauty.
- Jun has the ability to supress the influence of the Devil Gene. Dialogue in Kazuya's Tekken 4 ending would indicate that this ability is not unique to her, but shared among the members of the Kazama clan.
- The kanji for "Jun" means "pure" in Japanese.
- Jun's costume 'theme' seems to be white. This may be a reference to the universal symbol of good and purity.
- It is commonly believed that she was responsible for creating the Angel side of Kazuya Mishima's soul, although this hasn't been confirmed. The belief is furthered by the extreme similarity of Jun's and Angel's Tekken Tag Tournament endings.
- The father of Asuka Kazama is Jun's brother.
- Some fans believe Jun to be the old woman warning Julia Chang about the future calamity prior to the events of Tekken 6
- It has been confirmed in the Tekken 6 storyline that Jun was murdered by Ogre, however this is arguable considering the story is told via Jin's prespective, who assumed his mother was dead from the beginning of Tekken 3. Fans still declare her as "missing." However, Katsuhiro Harada, the director of Tekken, confirms that Jun is not dead, and the only absolutly killed characters are the first King and the first Armor King. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=226228
- Jun used "Morning Fields Osaka" as her stage, however, Stonehenge can be seen in the background. This discrepency is unexplained by Namco.
- Jun's sub-boss is Wang Jinrei.
- Jun appears as a mid-boss in the arcade version the "New Character" setting in Test Mode is set to "Baek & Lei", which can only be beaten using Marshall Law. This can be switched around so that she is one of the ten characters the player begins with. Doing this also makes Jun unselectable as a playable character (does not apply to the PS2 arcade version found in Tekken 5). To avoid this problem, change the test settings to "Jun & Lei" under the "New Character" setting
- In the Playstation version, if playing with Devil/Angel, Jun will be the mid-boss on Stage 9.
- There is speculation to whether or not the intimate meeting between Kazuya and Jun was consensual.
- Jun, at 5'7", is the second tallest female character, after Kunimitsu.
- Jun is not playable in Tekken 3, although there is a cheat which makes Jun playable, but using Nina Williams' body and Jin Kazama's moves.
- Many believe that Tekken Tag Tournament's boss character, Unknown, is in fact a possessed version of Jun due to their physical resemblence, her tattoo (similar to Jin's), and because she always starts out with Jun's moveset. However, their difference in height of a full inch, difference in eye colour (Jun has brown eyes, Unknown has green), and laterality (Jun is right-handed, Unknown is left-handed) makes it unlikely for them to be the same person, yet this does not seem to deter fans from believing that they are one and the same.
- Jun's ending is similar to Angel's ending.
Tekken 5 & Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection
- In Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Asuka Kazama can be customized to look like a younger Jun. A similar short neck hairstyle and white hairband can be equipped so that Asuka Kazama can resemble Jun. The only difference is that the customized hair is brown while Jun had black hair.
- Ling Xiaoyu has a similar role to Jun's (with Jin instead of Kazuya).
Other
- In Tekken: The Motion Picture, the invitation given to Jun spelled "Well come" instead of "Welcome", and her boss shortly after giving here the invitation, pronounces her name as "Kazima" Jun.
- In Tekken Forever, Angel refers to Jun as her daughter. It is unknown if this is in the litteral sense or if it is metaphorical (e.g. if Angel simply views everyone as her 'children'). It is also believed that Angel could be an entity within Jun. The comic was cancelled after the first issue, leaving along with Unknown's identity to be unresolved.
Story
Jun is an officer of the WWWC, a wildlife protection organization. She is called "The Chosen One" by her Kazama relatives. She is highly psychic and can sense a mysterious power surrounding Kazuya Mishima. At the behest of her father's ghost, she sets out to free Kazuya, who smuggles environmentally-protected animals, and also wants to free him of his evil power during the tournament.
When the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2 was coming to an end, Jun Kazama comes to the stunning realization that Kazuya's supernatural strength stems from Devil. But she cannot help being drawn to him, propelled by a mystic force beyond her control.
Ending Animation "Purity"
A forest is shown. Birds, a squirrel, and a horse can be seen. A yellow bus pulls up at the forest. Jun Kazama steps out of the bus and into the forest. Jun takes a deep breath. Some birds, a horse, a deer, and a squirrel come up to her. Jun lets the squirrel climb up one of her arms and onto her shoulder. A bird is resting on Jun's other shoulder. Then, Jun is shown on the horse's back, riding off into the distance. It appears that the sun has almost set. After a while, Jun gets off of the horse's back and walks a little bit further. Jun begins to watch the sunset.
As a child, Jun witnessed Kazuya Mishima being thrown off of a cliff by his father, Heihachi Mishima. She climbed down the cliff to try and save Kazuya but was unable to find him. She was haunted by this experience all through her childhood and into her adulthood. In the present day, Jun is an officer of the WWWC, a wildlife protection organization. She is highly psychic and can sense a mysterious power surrounding Kazuya Mishima (who is revealed to have survived the fall from the cliff).
She is teamed up with police officer Lei Wulong and their assignment is to investigate the Mishima Conglomerate's genetic engineering of bio-weapons, but she is constantly drawn to Kazuya; she can't let him give in to his hatred and kill his father, Heihachi Mishima.
After many confrontations, Jun discovers that Kazuya is possessed by the Devil but is able to convince Kazuya to spare the life of Heihachi.
The story jumps to the future to show that Jun is living a peaceful and happy life with her son, Jin Kazama. However, she is able to sense something strange in the air (most likely Ogre.) She promises Jin that everything will be alright and the two leave together hand in hand.
Tekken 3
During The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, Jun Kazama wound up impregnated by Kazuya Mishima. At the conclusion of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, Devil left Kazuya and attempted to possess Jun's unborn child. But Jun defeated Devil and later gave birth to a son, Jin. She raised Jin for 15 years and taught him her Kazama style traditional martial arts. The two formed a strong bond and were very close. Sometime after Jin's 15th birthday, Jun sensed that approaching of Ogre and warned Jin to seek out his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima, should anything happen to her.
One night, Ogre did indeed attack. Jun screamed for Jin to flee but Jin wished to protect his beloved mother and prepared to fight Ogre to save Jun. However, Ogre was too much of a match for Jin and defeated him easily. What happened next is unclear, but by the time Jin woke up, the Kazama house had burned to the ground and Jun was missing. Jin searched for her frantically but was unable to find her. He was devastated and swore revenge on Ogre.
She was also featured as a short cameo for the arcade opening for Tekken 3, alongside Kazuya Mishima (who also made a short cameo) and Jin Kazama. Also, Ogre is holding something like the top of a pillar, or more likely a head, which is presumed by some to be Jun's, though it can't be confirmed.
There is a cheat available in Tekken 3 where Jun can be playable. Technically, she uses Jin's moves and Nina's body, but the coding is actually Jun's.
Tekken 3 Cheat Using Jun and Sake
Jun Kazama also appeared in Tekken Tag Tournament as a playable character, but that title has no bearing on the official story. This is Jun Kazama's last appearance as a playable character in a Tekken game so far.
Ending Animation
Jun stands beside Jin Kazama, who is laying on the ground on his back. They are in Unknown's stage. She crouches, and it is revealed that Jin has Devil markings on his forehead. Jun touches his forehead, the screen flashes white for a second, and the Devil markings disappear. Jun smiles slightly and stares lovingly at her son. When Jin regains consciousness and rises slightly, which is just a few seconds later, Jun is nowhere to be seen. It is assumed that it was Jun's spirit that healed Jin Kazama.
Tekken 4
In Jin's Tekken 4 ending, he sees a vision of Jun right before he is about to kill Heihachi Mishima. It is not known if this was his mother's spirit or merely a hallucination. It is more likely to be her spirit, since Jin was distracted by a white light before he saw her. The vision persuaded Jin to spare Heihachi on honour of his mother. He threw him to the ground and said: "Thank my mother, Jun Kazama."
Tekken 5
In the optional "Devil Within" mini game, Jin Kazama finds clues that lead him to believe that Jun is alive. He immediately goes in search of her, however, it turns out to be Ogre, the creature that attacked Jun. Jin defeated Ogre once again and was later saved from Jack robots by a white light. (Many believe this white light was the spirit of Jun.) It is not known if Devil Within is canonical or not.
Tekken 6
Jun Kazama is seen and mentioned numerous times during the prologue for the Scenario Campaign Mode for Tekken 6, in which Jin, Kazuya and Heihachi re-tell the main events of the previous Tekken games. In this prologue, Kazuya Mishima describes how he met Jun. He also describes how he found her fearless and mysterious. Jin Kazama then describes how he misses his mother and wishes she were still with him. He then goes on to explain that he defeated Ogre in honor of Jun.
Jun Kazama appears in the Tekken Movie as one of the main sources around the film. Before the events of the movie Jun was once close with the professinal street boxer Steve Fox. Also what is known that she was raped by Kazuya and became pregnant with Jin (which Kazuya never found out about until Jin was a young adult). Jun raised and trained Jin the Kazama Arts of Fighting. She was very protective of him and was very angry that he wanted to enter the Tekken tournament. She tried to hide the truth about his Mishima blood by telling him that his father was dead. It also revealed that Jun was saved by Heihachi Mishima. Jun was killed by a bombing caused by Kazuya and the Jack Police Force. This is the reason why Jin enters the tournament.
