[edit] New Gallery setup

Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants
05:44, 25 November 2007 (PST)
There's a new setup in town, so y'all better pay attention, cause here's how it works (as a reference point, see here).
  • First line will always be (with the name being linked): Gallery of the character, <name>.
  • Second line will always be: __NOTOC__
  • Titles, i.e. Tekken 2, Tekken Tag Tournament, etc. must be in linked form.
  • If the caption just says: "<name> as seen in <title>", or any variation of that, delete it.
  • As a general rule of thumb, always delete the <title> from the caption. It is obvious seeing how it is in that specific section, and quadrouple statements get annoying.
  • As a general rule of thumb, delete <name> whereever possible in the caption. Only exception is if you have to actually explain the source, e.g. an ending. In those cases, only use one of the names of the character, not both, i.e. instead of Asuka Kazama, just say Asuka.
  • If the image is a wallpaper, the caption should only say "Wallpaper". If it is a poster, it should say "Poster", and if it is artwork, it should say "Artwork".
  • If it is an image of <name> fighting someone, just write: "Fighting <opponent's name>". (the <opponent's name> should be linked)
  • In case of Outfits, only say what outfit it is, i.e. Player One, Player Two, etc. You may add what button must be pushed in order to select it.
  • In case of explanaitions, be as brief as possible. If it exceeds 4 lines, rephrase.

[edit] Move YouTube videos?

I think the YouTube videos in every section of the character pages greatly decrease the flow and continuity of the articles. I am proposing that they be moved to the individual gallery of each character instead, and can perhaps be linked to from the character article if the video is really needed to understand the storyline. Also, and this is just a side-thought, maybe more detailed and well-written storylines should be used, to make it more appealing and involving for fans and to make it feel more like an actual story. On the other hand, this could make it sound less fact-based and give a lot of leeway for original research and opinion. Thoughts? --Yenemus 08:14, 30 November 2007 (PST)

No, to the first. Instead of moving the videos, just scale them down to 240px. If that is not good enough for you, you can always make the video float left as well (which I think would actually be a pretty good idea, see example here). As for the storyline change, can you make an example to show exactly how you mean?
I don't know what you mean by float left, but the scaled videos do make for a good compromise. The Anna example looks decent. As for the story thing, I'm not the best of writers but here's a rough, unfinished example. --Yenemus 04:46, 1 December 2007 (PST)
Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants

float left is a reference to a function that allows oobjects (images, videos, flash, templates, tables, etc.) to "float left" of text, i.e. text appears on the right side of the media, as aposed to beneath it. For an example, compare this (video floats left) to this (video does not float left). As for the story, I can definitely see the idea, and if you were writing about Tekken character's in general (as in one single, intertwining document), it would be perfect, but it wouldn't work too well for two reasons. 1) it would screw up the existing coding and subpage-linkage; 2) It gives a bit too much leeway, making it easy to get sidetracked and start telling about a different character because of an interaction they had with the person the article should be about.
Both examples look the same to me. Maybe it's my computer or the fact that I'm using Firefox. Anyway, I get your point. About the storylines, I still think it would be better than the current lay-out of 'Tekken 1 Background Story, Ending Animation, Tekken 2 Background Story,... etc.' And about the leeway thing, it would be just like any biographical page on Wikipedia, and would need to be kept tidy. Fair enough, this may take some work, but we have plenty of people willing to help out, I'm sure (most of the members here seem like good people). I noticed the Heihachi article and found it quite interesting as it describes his storyline somewhat in the way I proposed, but, ridiculously, it is all under the section heading 'Introduction'. It doesn't make sense most of the information about the character and even an Analysis of him is under 'Introduction'. I think a new lay-out for character pages is urgently needed. Maybe separate it into Storyline and Gameplay? Or perhaps something else. But the way it is now isn't really the best. Also, seeing as image galleries are being changed to one-for-each-character rather than one-for-each-character-per-installment, are the installment templates in chararacter articles still necessary? Thank you for your swift replies, by the way. --Yenemus 10:31, 1 December 2007 (PST)
P. S. We are getting way off topic, perhaps some of this should go under a new topic header. =P --Yenemus 10:32, 1 December 2007 (PST)
Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants

It's not because of your browser, I had accidentally messed up part of the code, but it is fixed and you should be able to see the difference now.

As for the Heihachi article, it should actually be cut down to look more like the other character articles. But if you can think of a good setup, feel free to show it off in your sandbox. But if you mean "gameplay" like in the Anna article, then it's a definite no-no. Those section should be re-edited and inserted in the respective strategies for the respective game and then removed from the article.

Yes, the installment template will still be necesarry due to the future movelists, strategies, and other stuff that are mentioned in the template. As for the gallery links, they will link to a specific section in the compiled article. But personally, I would like to tweek it a bit, in the sense of removing the section title from the template and instead write them manually in the article. As it is now, you can't edit a specific section, and I don't know about the others, but it annoys the living daylights out of me.

And sure, if you want seperate sections for each topic, go right ahead an make that.

I made my (somewhat crappy) attempt at a character relationship chart. It can be seen here. Wondering if we'd like to use it anywhere, perhaps until the Flash version is ready.

How about we create a guide section. Like how to defeat characters in the game more effectively and how to avoid dying in game. This section could help arcaders keep their wallets more full if the guides are proven effective =D So how about this idea? Jaewonnie, 8:18 PM, 13 March 2008

*cough cough we already have a namespace reserved for strategy sections on every character page for all games, the strategies just haven't been made cough* But it's a good idea, we just happen to already have thought of it 6 months ago. On the 3rd of April, I played Tekken 6 but I lost on the 6th stage. Then a guy came along and I watched him play through Tekken 6. He got up to Jin Kazama as well as Nancy but unfortunately he lost. I saw the life bar of Nancy-MI?47J and it was an eight. Does that mean the page for Nancy should be moved to Nancy-MI847J? And am I the only one who has played Tekken 6 here?

There's no point to the "Useful Pages" being on the front page, rather there should be a link to an index file in the toolbox to the left. The "Future releases" is also void, as we deal with one game series only, and anything new will be to far in-between to have any sort of interest. Had it we dealt with Namco as a game company, it would have been a useful idea. And if you want to shorten the Tekkenpedia section, you really should consider expanding the About article first. But if you do that, the part can certanly be used.

Could you define "Total Unique Pages"?
Yep, scores are calculated as follows:
  • One (1) point for each unique page edited
  • Square Root of (Total Edits Made) - (Total Unique Pages) * 2

Samuel 13:14, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Ah, didn't answer your question. Total Unique Pages are edits made to entirely different pages. So two edits on Nina Williams is scored differently from an edit on Nina Williams and Anna Williams. Total unique pages is a count of all the unique pages you've made edits to. Samuel 13:16, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants
14:18, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
So theoretically, it is possible to have a tied for first, if two users made at least one edit to every page currently existing on the Tekkenpedia (assuming that no more pages were created), no? A few questions though.
  1. Should images not be in its own category, rather than be mixed with other page edits? I.e. there is one system counting article contributions and one counting media contributions, since different people may contribute in different ways.
  2. If the first edit a person makes to any given article is later removed, it's still going to count, meaning that vandals or people who make no actual contributions can actually achieve high scores (as I understand it). How would this be mended?
  3. Why do editing talk pages (this includes user talk pages) count? They can hardly be considered valid contributions.
  4. Isn't this system of rewards extremely unfair to new users?

These are what I could think of so far.

ILHI - "Leave behind your fears. Please believe; you will not falter. There's no danger here, you can breathe in clear blue water."
TALK - 15:54, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Hecko pretty much said everything I was going to say. Talk pages aren't actual articles, edits are reverted, removing any point in both edits made by the person and the reverter. However, reverting spam is something that could be noted still.

And as I am aware, JKF adds loads of images to the wiki, this counts right? Personally, I believe it shouldn't. And what is there to new users to edit when all the information is there? I pretty much patrol recent changes and take a look at the odd page every once in a while. Why? I have nothing to edit as this wiki is pretty good as it is, sure I can do movesets, but with three brothers, using the PS2 and a computer at the same time isn't pleasing to them. And then there's me not knowing the legend. I pretty much get my information from here and not add information I found elsewhere on here.

To sum it up: Quantity is not quality.

All valid points, as I'm using an off the shelf extension it's hard for me to make any adjustments to the algorithm used for calculating the score, e.g. removing points for talk pages, image uploads (although I think image uploads are a valid contribution). Secondly, I don't think people are going to game the system. If I was offering $100 for whoever came first in the table each week then their would be incentive to edit every page and make meaningless contributions, as it stands now all you get is your name at the top of the table and soon the ability to put some belt icons on your user profile page (I will also be creating icons for one off outstanding contributions to the site, e.g. Hecko your talk boxes would qualify). I still believe there is much more content that could be added to the wiki, move lists, strategy sections on each character are lacking at the moment although we're seeing some good progress towards them so new users aren't at too much of a disadvantge. Remember this isn't a competition!
All in all, this is an experiment. The wiki has to keep moving forwards and having new ideas added to it, if they don't work then I'm more than happy to remove them, but it's better to trial something like this for a bit and see how it goes. Samuel 01:41, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants
02:09, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
I'd rather not be included in this as it is now. The idea is good in theory, but it doesn't really "work". The math is "broken" and new users aren't likely to get above 250 total unique edits, meaning they probably won't get anywhere in the rankings, which is dominated by those of us who have been here for a while. The only way to make it "even" is to make it a weekly or bi-weekly thing, but that would make it a contest because people would want the belts (it doesn't have to be money you offer, as long as it is something that is desired), and then we'll get all the crappy minor edits that mean nothing.

You'd probably be better off adding the belt system to the forum, where people spam anyway. But feel free to try it out, if you feel like that would be necessary.

[edit] How to make Move pages

Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants
17:53, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm pretty pissed because I spent 1½ writing this crap in a comprehensible easy to follow way, and then my browser shut down before I could save, and everything was lost.
  1. Identify the move
    • Start off assuming its a chain, that will make things easier.
    1. If the movelist says "During xxx", the move is a chain. If it chains from a stance, write the legend for the respective stance in the "chains from" section and link to its article. If it links from an attack of sorts, write the command of the attack and link to the article.
    2. If you can identify a part of a long string of moves as several minor independant move, you likely have a chain. If you can identify EVERY part of the string, make the independant moves link to eachother (see Left Right Combo (Bryan Fury) and Quick Left Low Kick), and make the full string an independant article (see One Two Low Kick). If you can't identify any of them, you most likely have an independant string. If you have doubts, contact me.
  2. Learn it's history
    • Always start off with a little "history lesson" so that people can ease into the artcle.
    1. If the move has an alternate name, be sure to add it in a subclause. Most alternate names are in fact what they were called in the Japanese version of the game, or a term popularly used in the Tekken Community for a specific unnammed move (e.g. Electric Wind Godfist). You can find those names on SunlightYellow or TekkenZaibatsu.
    2. Write what game the move first appeared in and who could use it.
    3. If the move has specific information in regards to the characters who can use it, make mention of it (see Demon Scissors for example). This includes character gaining the move, losing the move, unable to perform alternate commands, or use it in strings, etc.
  3. When to use
    • Make a section called "When to use" (content should be obvious)
    1. The sections should be made simple and comprihensible so that players new to Tekken, or players who simply wish to get better, can learn when to use the move and when not to, if at all.
    2. If possible, tell about its value in juggles, okizeme, wallgame, while on defense, and while on offense, but only if relevant! E.g. writing about the okizeme value of a move the does not hit opponents lying down would be idiotic, as would writing about a reversal's/parry's value in a juggle.
    3. Also if possible, try to keep this relative to opponent skill. For instance, some moves that are often used against a mediocre or "bad" player might never be used against a good or even pro player.
  4. How to defend against it
    • Make a section called "How to defend against it" if relevant (content should be obvious)
    1. Again, simple and comprihensible. See here for example.
  5. Various
    • Some moves may require additional information, such as a trivia section or reversal/parry list, etc. Make these if relevant.

Any questions on something I forgot to cover?

[edit] Tekkenpedia 2.0

Over the last six months Tekkenpedia has been experiencing some great growth, we recently broke 2000 unique visitors in one day and approx 40,000 page views! Although things are going great I think it's due for the site to have a "reboot". By reboot, I mean adding a number of new features that I've thought and asking what features the community wants added. Here's a few of mine:

[edit] Adding semantic MediaWiki

Semantic mediawiki installs a sort of database ontop of the regular MediaWiki. This would be great for the move list pages that are going up at the moment, you could for example order all the moves by frames, damage etc. It would also mean that a form could be added for creating new moves, thus making it much quicker and easier to add pages.

[edit] Moves + Move Videos

We could set aside a couple of weeks to make a concentrated effort to add all the moves and videos to the site. I have a capture card for my computer + a PS3 so I can contribute some video, hopefully a few others can as well.

[edit] New Site Design

I've been talking about redesigning the site for a while, if I sit down for a couple of weeks then I could come up with a pretty cool design.

So please leave comments on my ideas plus some suggestions of your own. Thanks, Samuel 12:23, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Comments

Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants

Okays:
  1. Semantic MediaWiki thingy: I doubt anyone would ever use the sort thingy, but it couldn't hurt, I guess? I'm a bit weary about the form for creating new moves though, as it seems waaaaay to easy to exploit...
  2. Move videos: I take things as they come, but if you just make 3 move videos per day, you'll probably catch up in 2-3 weeks.
  3. New site design: Sure, as long as it isn't some Monaco/Quarts lookalike...
The Semantic mediawiki extension would also allow auto-generation of move lists for characters. So if you update a move, say it had an incorrect number of frames, that change would propogate out to the move lists for the character. Also adding this is quite an easy win, i.e. getting it up and running just requires installing the extension then modifying the infobox include for the moves with the semantic properties. Polls belong in a forum, keep them in the forum. Making all moves + videos is already mentioned, why do you mention it again? Cheats, if any exist, are already noted on the respective game pages, and FAQs are refered to here as strategies, which we've made room for long ago, no one has just written any, except for this one.

Why? Because there are much easier ways of finding an arcade with not only instruction, but also maps and such. Simply go to the yellowpages website (or whatever corresponds) of whatever country you're from/visiting, type the word for "arcade" and click search.

[edit] Going Metric

Hecko Xtalk - blog - anime rants
04:57, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
Let's face it, the current imperial system used on the site with feet&inches instead of centimetres and pounds instead of kilograms is super innacurate. So I say we just go metric, since that's give us the most precise data (already present on Jap websites), and then we won't have to fiddle with stuff like decimals or fractions.

Yes, it should be metric. Samuel 22:32, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Freeze on Character Pages

I'd like to get some feedback from the community on freezing the characters homepages from further edits. It appears that most of the information for Tekken 6 has now been entered onto the character pages and freezing them would reduce the amount of vandalism that the wiki is getting.

Samuel 22:26, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Move Names

I'm getting confused with the move names. On my copy of the game it says "Delta Slicer" and "Destructive Form", but here it says "Delta Cutter" and "Destroy Form". --Tekken-EX 00:34, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Street Fighter Debate

Do we really need all this Street Fighter info? Yes, Tekken is doing a cross-over with SF, but this is still Tekkenpedia, so having pages on the various SF characters seems misplaced. Would it not be better to just wiki-link them, e.g. Ken Masters? --Hecko 01:52, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

You should see our discussion on the Street FighterX Tekken Talk page. -- YouriKamachii
Since we have SF pages, should we have a Namco X Capcom page as well? --Tekken-EX 21:39, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
No, that's exactly the point. We should remove the SF pages since it makes no sense having them in a wiki about Tekken. --Hecko 22:04, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
So, should we delete them? --Tekken-EX 07:43, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

No, you may only delete the them with Samuel's permission. And I think we should keep them for the time being.

If by the time Street Fighter X Tekken/Tekken X Street fighter is released and it is revealed that they have no connection to the tekken universe then they should be deleted, but for now you should keep them in my honest opinion.

[edit] Tekken 1 Movelists

We should have a different setup for Tekken 1 Movelists, since they're never actually shown in-game nor do they show how much damage they inflict. --Tekken-EX 07:41, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Galleries

Can we put matches on galleries as well? --Tekken-EX 12:12, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit] Kara

KazamaBoy - What's happening?
TALK - September 2010
If you dont know who Kara is, she is a character that has a big role in the 2010 Tekken Movie. But does not appear in the games should I create her a page?
