Introduction
Kazuya Mishima has been featured in every Tekken game, except Tekken 3.
Kazuya Mishima is the son of Heihachi Mishima and Kazume Mishima, the grandson of Jinpachi Mishima. He is also the father of Jin Kazama and occasional partner of Jun Kazama (they share an awkward relationship, in which was never fully explained by Namco themselves). He is also the half brother of Lars and is the adopted brother of Lee, who Kazuya has never liked and shares a intense rivalry with.
It also appears that when Kazuya was a child, he had a special bond with his grandfather, Jinpachi. He respected Jinpachi more than his father, Heihachi. It is also assumed that Jinpachi could have been responsible for the original form of the Devil Gene. It appears that only this Gene is passed down through Grandsons, in this case Kazuya Mishima, and Jin Kazama, Jinpachi's great grandson. Heihachi cannot attain the Devil Gene if this is true, but overall he is supposedly as strong as the ones that have the Devil Gene, which is quite possible, considering the extreme amounts of physical damage he has survived in the past. Due to genetics it could be assumed that Heihachi is a 'black sheep' of sorts, in that the gene for devil control skipped a generation, such as the genetics for black colored sheep do.
When Kazuya's name is written in Japanese, it's translated as 三島 一八(Mishima Kazuya) or みしま かずや(Mishima Kazuya)
Kazuya got 八(hachi or pachi or ya) from 平八(Heihachi) of a name of father and followed 一(ichi or kazu) which meant a beginning because it was the eldest son. The notation that 一八 is rare in Japan. Two numbers continue. 一 is 1. 八 is 8.
Child Hood
Kazuya Mishima as a child was raised kindly by his grandfather Jinpachi who he thought as his real father. He was also abused by his father, Heihachi who disliked the kindness he saw in Kazuya eventally got fed up of his weakness and threw him off of a cliff and also imprisoned Jinpachi. Still a young child Kazuya was able to climb up the cliff making a deal with the Devil that it would help him kill Heihachi in exchange for his soul. Kazuya spent his life getting into fight's, trainning and having hatred for his father Heihachi Mishima.
Entering the tournamnent
Years before the tournament Heihachi threw Kazuya down a cliff when he was only a child. Years later, Kazuya entered the king of Iron fist tournament to kill his father Heihachi once and for all. He was unstoppable during the tournament and defeated many of his opponnents. He even defeated Heihachi in a vicous "FATHER V SON" battle.
The Battle of Kazuya's soul
After the tournament the Devil Gene in his blood tried to take over Kazuya and consume his mind and soul with nothing but evil. Kazuya though had another side called Angel battling over the evil side of Kazuya's soul. Kazuya then announced the King of Iron fist tournament 2.
Love with Jun and the progression of the tournament
After many things happened to Kazuya he was protected by Bruce Irvin, Ganryu and Anna. He was also an assasination target for Nina. He also fell in love with tournament entry, Jun Kazama he said in his own words "she was so mysterious" which he liked he also had a one night stand with her which would lead to the birth of his only son, Jin Kazama.
Depature and Return
During the end of the tournament he was then defeated and thrown down a volcano by Heihachi who he thought he had killed. He astonishingly survived and was found by the G Coporation company who took him in and was trying to create him a new, more powerful body. 20 years later, Heihachi found out about this and sent the Tekken Force to their central building to kill all of them. They then run into Kazuya who killed every single enemy sent by Heihachi in the building.
Grand Father, Father and son
In responce Heihachi announced the King of iron fist tournament 4 to lure him in. During the tournament Kazuya defeated his foster brother Lee and was awaiting a battle with Jin but he didn't arrive he then headed for Heihachi knowing that Heihachi had something to his departue. He lost to Heihachi but Heihachi didn't kill him instead lead him to Jin who was tied up in chain's. Kazuya then laser striked Heihachi and made Kazuya wake and unleash his Devil Gene. He then defeated him in a horrofic knock out and Heihachi.
Head of G - Coporation
By the time he woke Jin was gone and came Jack 4's sent by G Coparation who tried kill him and his father Heihachi. They fought as Father and Son for a while but then Kazuya betrayed him and threw him into a pile of Jack 4's who then self destructed on next to him. Kazuya ascaped unharmed. With Heihachi supposily dead he headed for G Coporation and killed all who betrayed him. He then became head of G Coparation who rose up to kill Jin They put a bounty his head and Jin then announced the King of iron fist tournament 6, which Kazuya keenly entered.
During the tournament he battled his half brother Lars twice and was said in the last battle that he would allow him to carry on but warned him about the curse of the Mishima bloodline and then walked off with bodyguard Anna at his side.
Analysis of Kazuya
In the original entry to the Tekken franchise, Kazuya was considered to be the primary protagonist. And for all intents and purposes, there was no reason to believe differently. According to differing sources (such as Tekken: The Motion Picture and a brief scene in Ling Xiaoyu's Tekken 5 ending), Kazuya was actually quite frail, kind and timid as a boy and was the victim of years of abuse at the hands of Heihachi. Indeed, Kazuya originally entered the first Rave War/King of Iron Fist Tournament in order to face off against his father, who was played up to be a corrupt corporate tyrant. Kazuya's clothing of choice, simple white pants and red gloves and footpads, even helped to draw parallels to another "mysterious loner" hero similar to Ryu. So most people (both within the game and in real life), simply wrote Kazuya off as the cliché fighting game hero.
There was only one clue as to Kazuya's true intents and nature: His secret PS One palette swap, which turned out to be Devil.
Tekken 2 saw Kazuya's true nature revealed in full. After killing his father (or so he thought), instead of bringing justice to the Mishima Zaibatsu and righting the wrongs of his father, Kazuya repeated the corrupt practices of his father and turned it into an even more ruthless organization. While Heihachi was merely ruthless, Kazuya was absolutely without conscience. He hired assassins to eliminate any of his critics or rivals (such as the father of Eddy Gordo), he attempted to extort money from several businesses and organizations, and he even smuggled endangered species and conducted genetic experiments on them (Alex and Roger). Of course, the reason for his evil deeds was because he had sold his soul to Devil all those years ago, and had allowed his hatred for Heihachi to consume him. Kazuya still had good within him (as represented by Angel), which constantly battled his evil side, and this would turn out to be his downfall. Heihachi managed to take advantage of his son's confusion caused by this internal war and defeated him in the second King of Iron First Tournament. Kazuya was then thrown into a volcano and killed, while the Devil in his body escaped and eventually made contact with Kazuya's son, Jin kazama who succeeded his father as the series' new protagonist.
Of course, G Corporation eventually located Kazuya's remains and confiscated them. At this point, they regenerated Kazuya's body and then Kazuya made a deal to remain hidden within G Corporation's labs and be tested on. Kazuya had learned from his mistakes. The next time he faced Heihachi, he wanted to be in full control of his Devil powers. Of course, this plan did not go as Kazuya intended; Heihachi ruined it by invading G Corporation and stealing their research.
Since his original appearance, Kazuya's character has gone through many transformations: From hero, to villain, to anti-hero and back again. Whatever was left of his good side appears to be totally suppressed by his Devil persona. Kazuya no longer fights against his darker side, and the two seem to have come to mutual terms, as Kazuya can call upon Devil whenever he likes now (such as in his Tekken 5 introduction). This makes him one of the more unique protagonists in fighting games and makes him quite popular amongst Tekken fans.
Trivia
- General:
- It is often believed that Kazuya is a homage to Dragonball Z's Vegeta character, since the two characters have many distinguishing similarities, in concern of their character traits, their attitudes, and their personalities. Also, their physical appearance, most noticeably their hair styles, are similar also. Namco has however neither confirmed nor denied that this was a homage or even intentional.
- Kazuya's sub-bosses include Lee Chaolan, Roger, Heihachi Mishima, and Raven.
- Considered a handsome young man when he first appeared in Tekken.
- Tekken:
- Kazuya's stage 8 sub-boss is Lee. Once you finish arcade mode with Kazuya, Lee is unlocked and then while playing as Lee... Kazuya is his stage 8 sub-boss.
- Kazuya had a 3rd costume named Devil. He is playable by beating 8 games of galaga minigame. (its a game while Tekken loads). Since he's Kazuya 3rd costume, he wont shoot lasers or fly he'll have the same moves as Kazuya does.
- Tekken 2:
- The exact nature of the intimate relationship between Kazuya & Jun in Tekken 2 that led to Jin in T3 has been left rather ambiguous. While many fans like to believe that some degree of love and mutual attraction was involved, however, these ideas are often based on non-canon storylines such as Tekken Tag Tournament or Tekken: The Motion Picture. The canon games describe Jun as being "mysteriously drawn to Kazuya", which has led some fans to come to the conclusion of this has led to non-consensual sex, i.e. rape, or at "best", a one-night stand (this is however often discerned due to it not seeming fit for the nature of either character). Namco discribe both characters as to "drawn to one another"
- In Tekken 2, Kazuya's stage is "Darkness Temple".
- Tekken 3:
- Before the release of Tekken 3, many Tekken fans believed that the early sketches of Jin Kazama were Kazuya Mishima in his teen years, due to their similarities.
- Because Kazuya Mishima was not featured in Tekken 3, many fans believed that Namco were going to kill off the character completely, by the time plans of a Tekken 4 was announced, this created a loud outcry amongst the fans, who wanted Kazuya to return to the series.
- Tekken Tag Tournament:
- In Tekken Tag Tournament, by choosing Kazuya and Devil as a team, when tagging, one will transform into the other instead of the usual "run out - run in" tag animation due to the fact that Devil is Kazuya's alter-ego. For the same reason, it was impossible to team together Kazuya and Angel.
- Tekken 4:
- Since Tekken 4, Kazuya has been voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa
- From Tekken 4 onwards, Kazuya's left iris has become permanently red.
- Kazuya was the third stage boss for Tekken 4's Tekken Force mini-game. This stage was known as the "Corridor."
- Kazuya and Armor King both have a red eye.
- Tekken 5 / Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection:
- Two of Kazuya's childhood memories were seen in Tekken 5. His special bonding with his grandfather Jinpachi Mishima seen in Kazuya's ending, and a few seconds before he was thrown into a ravine by his father Heihachi seen in Ling Xiaoyu's ending. The latter however had a comical twist and is thus not entirely true.
- Kazuya received a new win animation in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection in which he performs his Hell Lancer move, then the Glorious Demon God Fist move, while turning his head slightly and shouting, "Doryah!".
- Kazuya's purple tuxedo makes a return as a selectable attire for him. However, its been redone as it is now longer and is red on the inside.
- In the opening movie Kazuya is wearing his new pants with flames instead of the ones that have clouds and lightning.
- Tekken 6 / Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion:
- In the Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion trailer, the text for Kazuya reads: "He's got the whole world in the palm of his hand." ([1]).
- In the new console / NOVO trailer, Kazuya is shown in a helicopter following Jin, who is driving through a city on his motorcycle while tanks fire CIWS at him, which Jin manages to evade. Eventually, Jin and Kazuya meet and fight, and Kazuya apparently destroys Jin's motorcycle with an axe kick during the fight ([2]).
- In the "Power is Everything" trailer for Bloodline Rebellion, Kazuya can be heard saying, "Where did you do with Jin Kazama? Denial has made you weak." (at 0:14 - 0:22).
- In the "Gamescom" trailer for Bloodline Rebellion, Kazuya can be heard saying about, "It's the fate of our family to fight and betray each other. The Curse of The Mishima Bloodline"
- Kazuya's final boss in Arena is Devil Jin. Additionally, his sub-boss is Heihachi.
Story
Version 1
Kazuya is the cold blooded son of Heihachi Mishima. At the age of 5 he was thrown off a cliff by his father. Kazuya survived and vows revenge to defeat his father, he enters the first tournament to kill Heihachi.
Ending Animation "A Father's Fall"
After defeating his father, Heihachi Mishima, Kazuya assumes control over the entire Mishima Zaibatsu. His first act as the head of the Mishima Zaibatsu was to take his father's supposed lifeless body and throw it off the same cliff he was thrown off by his father so many years ago. After the deed is done, he turns his head and smiles.
After defeating his father, Heihachi Mishima, and throwing his lifeless body from a cliff (as Heihachi did to his son previously) Kazuya appointed himself the new head of the Mishima Zaibatsu. After 2 years had passed, Kazuya organised the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2. There was also a rumour that Kazuya had made a pact with the Devil. This turned out to be true. Kazuya did this to gain the power he needed to save his own life and to destroy his father forever!
Ending Animation "Evil Smile"
Kazuya defeats Devil in a brutal battle. Disgusted that he could have trusted someone so weak with his life, and impressed with himself in the sense that he defeated a supposed powerful being, Kazuya simply walks away. Devil, however, regains consciousness, and he tries to kill Kazuya with an eye beam, but Heihachi takes the blast in an attempt to save his son. Kazuya stares at Heihachi, who is standing up and not moving very much, for a moment before smiling. Kazuya grabs his father and uses him as a human shield to block Devil's blasts, and once he gets close, he throws Heihachi's lifeless body at Devil, distracting him. When Devil turns around, Kazuya hits Devil with a Dragon Uppercut, effectively knocking him out. Kazuya then smiles victoriously.
Tekken 3
Pre-Tekken 3, Heihachi killed Kazuya 20 years ago. However Kazuya's remains were accidentally discovered by G Corporation, who took those remains and revived him. Kazuya then entrusted himself to the corporation, allowing them to run several tests on him so he could fully understand the Devil Gene. It can be said that this was going on until the start of the Fourth Tournament, which was about 20 years after the Second Tournament.
Kazuya also appeared in the Tekken 3 arcade opening, although he was only a cameo who appeared alongside Jun Kazama (who also appeared as a cameo) and Jin Kazama.
Tekken: The Motion Picture
His father, Heihachi Mishima, threw him off of a cliff as a young boy to see if he could climb back up, as the lion cubs do. Kazuya survived, and during his arduous struggle back up the cliff, he swore to get revenge against his father. This hatred is the dominant force in his life. His entire existence has been spent preparing for this one act of violent revenge. As Kazuya was going to die an evil spirit flowed through him."Will you help me?" Kazuya asked? "Yes, in exchange for your soul." the Spirit spoke. Kazuya answered yes and the spirit bonded with him. 16 years later, a research team called WWWC had been searching for a boy fallen off a crag which was Kazuya. The first researcher to find Kazuya was Jun Kazama. She was impregnated by Kazuya.
Kazuya is featured as a playable character in Tekken Tag Tournament, a non-canonical Tekken game.

A few days later, G Corporation, a biotech firm making revolutionary advances in the field of biogenetics researches brought him back to life, with G Corporation's aid Kazuya investigated the biomechanics of the devil gene within him by subjecting himself to verious experiments. Kazuya believed that once he unlocked the power of the devil gene he would be powerful enough to defeat his father and destroy the Mishima Zaibatsu.
20 years later the Tekken Forces attacked G Corporation and stole their data, Kazuya was also targeted in the fight.
