[edit] Introduction

Jin Kazama (風間 仁, Kazama Jin) is the current protagonist of the Tekken series, and has been featured in every Tekken game since his creation, as well as in Tekken: The Motion Picture. He is also set to be the main protagonist in the 2009 release film simply entitled, "Tekken". Jin is also featured in Namco X Capcom, where he teams up with Ryu (from the Street Fighter series) and Taki (from the Soul series). In this game, Jin wants to defeat Devil.

Jin Kazama is the son of Jun Kazama and Kazuya Mishima. In Tekken 5, it is revealed that Jin has a cousin, Asuka Kazama. However, they don't seem to be aware of their relation. During The King of Iron Fist Tournament 2 (which is the setting of the game Tekken 2), Kazuya and Jun crossed paths and were intimate. Jun found herself pregnant with Jin immediately afterwards. The Devil that possessed Kazuya attempted to enter Jin while he was still in the womb, but Jun defeated it. Wishing to raise her son alone, Jun disappeared into a remote mountain location, where she raised Jin and trained him in her Kazama-style self-defense fighting style. After many years, Jun sensed the approaching of a great evil (Ogre) and told Jin that if anything happened to her, that he should seek his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima. Jun's words proved to be prophetic, and some time after Jin's 15th birthday, Jun was attacked by Ogre. Some time later, Jin awoke amongst rubble and searched for his mother, but he could not find her anywhere. Jin swore revenge.

[edit] Analysis of Jin

Jin's actions and surroundings fit the mold of a quintessential "tragic hero," except for his lack of a tragic flaw. As with many tragedies, all of the major traumatic events that occur within the hero's life are wholly beyond his control. First and foremost, there's the fact that his grandfather and father are two of the most ruthless individuals who've ever lived. Secondly, his mother was cruelly and abruptly taken from him while he was still a helpless teen. Third, he was betrayed by his grandfather, whom he trusted deeply. Finally, the return of his great-grandfather, Jinpachi Mishima, has caused him to begin losing his internal struggle with the Devil within. Each of these occur to a helpless and unassuming Jin, who is simply doing what he can to set things right at every turn.

Jin's personality ranges from calm to angry at various moments, and his words and actions hint toward the bitterness within. He also has one personality trait which is common with many Japanese action heroes. Once Jin's mind is focused in any particular direction, it is very difficult to get him to change or even notice the events and people around him. People close to him, including Ling Xiaoyu and Hwoarang, are always going to extremes to gain Jin's attention, and yet, he rarely seems to notice. It is known, however, that he will help them if they need it, as Ling Xiaoyu's Tekken 4 profile and Hwoarang's Tekken 4 ending have shown.

Jin's disinterest in close relations probably has one unique motivation. As a result of his family's Devil Gene, Jin knows that people close to him will likely suffer--or worse--if he ever completely loses control. In addition, Jin may not show any interest in women because he plans to wipe out his lineage entirely. In short, during Tekken 4, Jin planned to kill his father and grandfather and then himself, dying without children to put an end to the Mishima curse once and for all. However, Jin could not go through with the deed after defeating his two predecessors, so it's unknown if he has given up on this plan completely since he saw the image of his mother Jun.

In addition, as of the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Jin's presence in a Tekken sequel was just about confirmed. Furthermore, he was shown in his human state, so this could be a good sign for the character's internal struggle, although he is using the Mishima Zaibatsu for evil. A while after this, Jin was confirmed to appear in the Tekken sequel, Tekken 6. As of Monday, November 26, 2007, Jin Kazama has been confirmed to be the "Mid boss" (before the final boss, Azazel) for Tekken 6 ([1]).

[edit] Appearance and Outfits

Jin Kazama is a Japanese male with black hair that is spiked upwards, in a style similar to the hairstyle of his father, Kazuya Mishima. In fact, in early screen showings of Tekken 3, many fans assumed the unnamed character of Jin Kazama to be Kazuya Mishima in his early teen years, due to their similarities. This, however, was not proven to be the case. Jin's hairstyle appears to be a mixture of Kazuya's hairstyle and Jun Kazama's bangs (fringes). Jin has a black mark on one of his arms, which Devil has branded onto him ([2]). Jin has worn many outfits in the Tekken series. Many of Jin's outfits feature flames on them, and he usually wears either gloves or gauntlets with his outfits. In Tekken 3, Jin's first outfit consisted of black pants and a red flame on one of the pants legs, along with red and black footpads. Jin also wore red and black gauntlets, with ten white dots on it in a pyramid design. In his second outfit, he wears mostly black pants with a small red design on one of the pants legs, resembling a medium-sized stripe, black boots, a shirt that is mostly yellow with some black designs resembling stripes on it, and red gloves. His third outfit is a Mishima High School uniform for males that consists of a blue shirt, striped blue-green pants, brown shoes, and red gloves. The sleeves of this outfit are rolled up so that they just barely come past the elbows. This outfit is unlocked by playing as Jin Kazama fifty times and then selecting him with either the "Start" button or the "Triangle" button. This also applies to Ling Xiaoyu and her Mishima High School uniform for females in Tekken 3. In Tekken Tag Tournament, Jin retains his Tekken 3 outfits, and he also gets two new ones, which are color variations of his first two Tekken 3 outfits. The first outfit's color variation is blue flames and blue gauntlets. The second outfit's color variation is the pants, which are now red with a small black design on one of the pants legs, which resembles a medium-sized stripe, a shirt that is mostly black with some red designs resembling stripes on it, and black gloves. In Tekken 4, Jin's first outfit consists of white pants with a large black design somewhat resembling a large flame, which covers most of that pants leg. He wears a black and yellow belt. Jin wears a short-sleeved shirt that is mostly black on one side and mostly white on the other side, with the mostly black side being on the side that the large flame design on Jin's pants is on, and the white side being on the side without that design. There are some black stripe designs on the white side, and the same designs, but in white, on the black side. They are located at the ends of the sleeves (circular), and at the part where the shirt ends (where Jin's chest is revealed) (vertically). A design resembling the scar on one of Jin's arms ([3]) is featured on the back of the shirt. The side of the design that is on the black side is white, and the side of the design that is on the white side is black. Jin wears red, white, and black (there is very little of this color, though) footpads and red, white, and dark blue gauntlets with a black spiral design on them. A small part of Jin's scar (the bottom of it) is visible while wearing this outfit. The shirt is open, revealing Jin's chest. When playing as Jin in Story mode in Tekken 4, before he fights Kazuya, he somehow loses the top part of this outfit. Jin's second outfit consists of red, white, and black (there is very little of this color, though) shoes, blue pants with yellow-gold flame designs, and a shirt, which is blue, except for the tops of the sleeves and the back of the jacket, which are white. There are yellow-gold flames on the front of this shirt, which correspond with the ones on the pants. The jacket also features a blue hood. The hood's two white strings and the two pants zippers (horizontal and around the knees) are visible, as well. There is also a vertical blue-white stripe going up the pants legs. Jin wears red, white, and dark blue gauntlets, which have a black spiral design on them. On the back of the jacket is a yellow-gold flame that somewhat resembles a "W". In Tekken 5, Jin's first outfit consists of black pants with a large white flame on one side, which starts at the bottom, and a much smaller white flame on the other side, which starts at the top. Both flames have yellow outlines. Jin also wears a black and yellow belt. Jin wears red, white, and black (there is very little of this color, though) footpads, as well as red, white, and dark blue gauntlets with a black spiral design on them. His second outfit consists of blue pants with yellow-gold flame designs, silver zippers, one on each pants leg, below the knees, a blue jacket, with the exceptions of the tops of the sleeves, the hood, and the back, which are purple. There are yellow-gold flame designs on the shirt, corresponding with the ones on the pants. There is also a yellow-gold flame design on the back, which resembles two "U"s beside each other (not in the shape of a "W"), with another "U" directly below them. There are also flame designs on the hood. Jin wears red, white, and dark blue gauntlets with a black spiral design on them. He also wears red, white, and black (although there is very little of this color) shoes. Jin's third outfit, which can be purchased in the "Customize" mode for 500,000 G, consists of black and white (there is less of this color, though) shoes, white pants with vertical zippers on each pants leg, a shirt with long black fur sleeves. There is a blue flame design on the back of the shirt, as well as a smaller blue flame design on one side of the shirt. Jin also has a white jacket tied around his waist in a knot. There is also a blue vertical stripe design with silver outlining on one side of the pants, on the back and on the same side as the side of the shirt that has a blue flame design on it. There are two long red strings hanging down from the shirt's zipper, on the same side as the side of the shirt that has the blue red flame on it. Jin's chest is slightly exposed in this outfit. There are also two pockets with zippers on each of the shirt's sides. There are also zippers on the cuffs of the sleeves. All of the zippers featured on this outfit have red outlining around them. There are many square designs on the back of Jin's collar. Jin wears red gloves with dots in a pyramid design on them, in a style similar to the designs on his Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament gauntlets. In Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, his outfits are the same as his outfits in Tekken 5, but with color edits. For his first outfit, the flames on his pants are now red. Both his footpads and his gauntlets have had their colors changed to red and black. This outfit is a reference to his first outfit in Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament. For his second outfit, his pants are now purple. The back and the tops of the sleeves are now blue. The bottom of the shirt is also purple now. The gauntlets are now red and black, again referencing his first outfit in Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament. His third outfit has remained unedited, and it is now available from the start (it doesn't have to be purchased). In Tekken 6, Jin has been shown wearing many outfits. Jin was featured in all three of the Tekken 6 trailers, and he wears a different outfit in each one of them. In the E3 2005 trailer, Jin appeared to be wearing his first Tekken 5 outfit, but with updated graphics. In the E3 2006 Full Trailer, Jin was wearing black pants with a red flame design on one side, a brown belt, and a sleeveless black shirt. He was also wearing red and black gauntlets with ten dots in a pyramid pattern on them. In the Tekken 6 Official Trailer / AOU Trailer, he was shown for a few seconds, throwing a punch that was similar to his "Demon's Paw" (f,F+2) move (either that or it was his "Demon's Paw" (f,F+2) move). In the Tekken 6 Official Trailer / AOU Trailer, he appeared to be wearing either his second Tekken 4 outfit, his second Tekken 5 outfit, or his second Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection outfit (his "jumpsuit" outfits). It is unknown whether this outfit will appear in Tekken 6 or not. In Tekken 6 images and screenshots, Jin has been shown mainly wearing two outfits. The first of these outfits consists of red and black footpads, pants with a large red flame on them (with a little bit of orange and yellow, but mostly red), a black and yellow belt, and red and black gauntlets with ten dots in a pyramid pattern on them. This outfit is almost identical to Jin's first Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament outfit, except for the graphical upgrades and the gauntlets, which appear to have the parts that cover the arms elevated, and they also now have two spikes protruding from the sides closest to his elbows. There is also a rectangular design on the tops of them now. The second of these outfits is a suit, which consists of a dark blue jacket, light purple striped pants, a black belt, black shoes, and a long-sleeved white shirt. The interior of the jacket is red. The white shirt's sleeves extend to the end of Jin's arms. This outfit is very similar to, though not idential to, what Jin wears in his Tekken 5 ending.

[edit] Trivia

  • Jin Kazama has been voiced by Isshin Chiba since Jin debuted in Tekken 3.
  • Despite having won two of the King of Iron Fist Tournaments, it was not until his victory in Tekken 5 that he was officially declared the winner and was given command of the Mishima Zaibatsu.
  • While some fans consider Jin to be somewhat "one dimensional," he still has an incredible fan following.
  • In Tekken 3, Jin's stage was "Tiger Dojo Tokyo".
  • Very little is known about his school life since he was more focused on ending the cursed Mishima bloodline.
  • In his ending in Tekken 4, he sees his mother, Jun. It could be more likely to be her spirit because Jin was interfered by somewhat like a light before he glances at her.
  • Jin Kazama's bosses in the Tekken Force side game in Tekken 3 are (in order of appearance) Paul Phoenix, Nina Williams, Hwoarang, and Heihachi Mishima.
  • Jin is selectable in Tekken 4 after beating the game once.
  • In Tekken 4 and Tekken 5, holding down 3 and 4 during the replay after winning a fight will allow Jin to say: "The Mishima bloodline ends here...".
  • Jin is also quite similar to Ryu from the Street Figher series, in that at one point he was wandering around the world honing their skills, like Ryu at the end of the anime Street Fighter II: V and during the animated movie. Both also study some form of Karate, are Japanese and from a mountainous region of Japan, wear similar gloves and fight not to be overcome by some kind of inner evil they never chose to get (such as Ryu's Dark Hadou and Jin's Devil Gene).
  • He is the only character in Tekken 4 whose 2+4 and F+2+4 throws are the exact same. The throw is called "Over the Shoulder Reverse".
  • Jin (alongside Mokujin) was the only character in Tekken 5 not shown in the console opening.
  • In Tekken 6, a lot of characters want to either capture or kill Jin. The characters out to get Jin are Asuka Kazama, Bruce Irvin, Kazuya Mishima, Miguel Caballero Rojo, Lei Wulong and possibly Kuma II.
  • Jin Kazama's fighting stance is very similar to the fighting stance that Paul Phoenix has in Tekken 3 and every Tekken game released after Tekken 3. Also, even though Jin changed his fighting style from Mishima Karate to traditional karate, he still retains the same fighting stance.

Tekken 3 Jin Kazama.

[edit] Manual Version

Jin is Kazuya Mishima and Jun Kazama's son. He received intense training under his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima, all in an effort to avenge the loss of his mother by fighting and defeating Ogre. This Tournament is his chance to test his strength and to face his destiny.

[edit] Official Version

Meeting with destiny... At the age of 15, Jin found out that he was Kazuya Mishima's son. At the same time, his mother, Jun Kazama, died. Jin trained himself under the supervision of Heihachi every day with the intention of defeating Ogre, who supposedly killed his mother. Heihachi was not only his grandfather, but also a reliable teacher.

Four years have passed. Having mastered the Kazama-style of Judo and Mishima Style Fighting Karate, Jin starts to take action as a martial artist.

[edit] Ending Animation "Dirty Blood"

Jin finally defeats his mother's murderer, True Ogre, which causes True Ogre to violently explode. Just seconds after his victory, Jin is attacked by Heihachi's Tekken Force, and he receives multiple gunshot wounds. Slowly succumbing to death, Heihachi shoots Jin in the head, therefore killing his own grandson. However, when Heihachi turns his back and walks away, he sees the bodies of his Tekken Force before him, and turns around to see Jin morphed in his devil form, Devil Jin. Jin slams Heihachi through a stone wall. Then, Jin hurls him down into the ground violently. Finally, Jin spreads his wings and flies off into the night.

Tekken Tag Tournament Jin Kazama.

Jin is featured as a playable character in Tekken Tag Tournament. However, Tekken Tag Tournament is not a part of the Tekken series' canonical storyline.

[edit] Ending Animation

Jin has apparently defeated Kazuya Mishima. Jin picks him up off of the ground with one hand. Jin prepares to punch Kazuya with his other hand to finish him off. The screen flashes white for a couple of seconds. Jin drops Kazuya, and then he looks at his hands, which are shaking uncontrollably. Jin falls to his knees. His hands are still shaking uncontrollably. Then, Jin lowers his head. This ending takes place in Jin's first Tekken Tag Tournament stage, which is called "Jin-A".

Tekken 4 Jin Kazama.
Tekken 4 Jin Kazama.

Brisbane, Australia... a city crowded with buildings, new and old. Nestled amongst the towering buildings of this city was a small dojo. A young man trained there, his face covered by the hood of his jacket. This young man trained there quietly...

... The young man was Jin.

Day after day, Jin trained in the traditional art of karate. Ever since Heihachi's betrayal, Jin loathed everything about himself. His Mishima bloodline, his fighting style, the Devil Gene in his blood, everything. He unlearned the Mishima-ryu fighting style, thanks to the dojo master's training, and he mastered traditional karate.

Jin's thoughts burned with the desire to destroy the evil Mishima bloodline, the bloodline of his grandfather, Heihachi Mishima, and his father, Kazuya.

One day, Jin heard rumors that The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 4 was announced.

A once in a lifetime opportunity to exterminate the Mishima clan... Without hesitation, Jin hardened his resolve to enter the tournament.

Jin hit a sandbag with his sharply honed kick. The bag burst open violently, and sand poured out of the bag...

[edit] Ending Animation "Fin"

Text

The tournament officials sent Kazuya a message: The winner of Round 7 by default is Kazuya Mishima.

Please proceed to the final stage.

Though Kazuya sensed Heihachi's hand in Jin Kazama's disappearance, a fearless grin crept upon his face as he headed towards the final stage.

While on his way to fight Kazuya, Jin was ambushed by the Tekken Force.

Jin brought down scores of them--

...but was eventually captured and taken away...

End of the text.

After being captured by Heihachi's Tekken Force, Jin is held captive at Hon-Maru. He awakes and violently attacks his father Kazuya, (whom in Jin's dream is antagonizing him to "give in to the anger", which would trigger off his Devil Gene) and defeats him; knocking him unconscious. Heihachi then stops Jin from leaving, challenging him to a fight in an attempt to take Jin's own Devil Gene. The two fight, and Jin proves that he's too much for Heihachi to handle. With Heihachi weakened, he then proceeds to carry out on his own mission (which was to destroy his evil bloodline by murdering his grandfather, his father, and then himself), but suddenly sees either a hallucination of his mother, Jun Kazama (or he sees her soul. It's not clear on either one.). Because of this, Jin drops his grandfather and says "Thank my mother, Jun Kazama" before once again flying off in the night.

However, Jin had no doubt that he was responsible for the destruction. Upon returning to Yakushima, Jin was plagued by reoccurring nightmares. Jin could feel the influence of the Devil Gene growing stronger.

"It is only a matter of time before I am completely overcome by the Devil Gene".

Although he has no direction, Jin begins his journey, guided only by fate...

[edit] Interludes

Stage 4: Hwoarang

Jin meets his rival Hwoarang and tells him that he can't fight him due to "family problems." Hwoarang still wants to fight, leaving Jin no choice. The match ends with Jin's victory. Hwoarang tells Jin that he will not accept defeat. Jin then leaves, promising to return later.

Final Stage: Jinpachi Mishima

At the final stage, Jin tells Jinpachi that he is "heir of the cursed blood" and Jinpachi tells him that his blood was screaming to destroy him. Jin declares an end to Jinpachi's evil.

[edit] Ending Animation

After defeating Jinpachi Mishima, Jin assumes control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. This is demonstrated with a dark figure walking into a throne room, filled with the Zaibatsu's top executives. The dark figure proceeds to sit on the throne, cross-legged, in which happens to be Jin. Looking bored, he then proceeds to do something....

[edit] Devil Within

Jin is the protagonist of the Tekken 5 Devil Within side game. In it, he has heard that his mother, Jun Kazama, may be alive. However, he does not find her. Instead, Jin confronts his nightmare, True Ogre, again. True Ogre will reveal another form after being defeated for the second time, Monstrous Ogre. Jin must defeat this form, as well. It is not known if Devil Within is canonical or not.

Upon defeating his great grandfather, Jinpachi Mishima, Jin became the new head of the Mishima Zaibatsu. Jin brought chaos and suffering across the globe using the Tekken Forces to get rid of each county's military power and take control of their energy resources, even their space colonies. After all that was done, the Mishima Zaibatsu declared itself an independent nation and declared war against all who opposed them. It seemed that the Mishima Zaibatsu would conquer the entire world until another power finally opposed Jin's organization. G-Corporation, led by Kazuya Mishima, puts a bounty on Jin Kazama's head. Almost as if Jin was expecting that G-Corporation would get involved, he immediately announced The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6.
