Development & Release
Tekken 6 is the eighth game in the Tekken series and was released in Japanese arcades on Monday, November 26, 2007 and worldwide for arcade machines as of January 2008. While having been released, it has been updated and patched by Namco-Bandai a few times. It is the first Tekken game to feature the Octave Engine, breakable floors, like in Dead or Alive, "Item Move" features for each character, the "Bound" system, and the "Rage" system (see below). It has been revealed by Namco-Bandai during a special press conference that Tekken 6 (arcade version) will NOT be released as a console version. Instead, the console version called Tekken 6, which will be released to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, will be the equivalent of Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, which was a arcade-only game.
- The deluxe arcade cabinet will retail for 4,480,000.00 JPY(36,229.72 USD) and will include a LIVE monitor, 2 Tekken 6 PCBs, 4 game stations.
- The standard arcade cabinet will retail for 1,758,000.00 JPY(14,210.26 USD) and will include 1 Tekken 6 PCB and 2 game stations.
- The Tekken 6 arcade board/PCB kit will retail for 598,000.00 JPY(4,833.86 USD) and will include 1 Tekken 6 PCB, 2 Tekken 6 control panels, and a Sega Net City kit.
- The LIVE monitor will be 42 inches and output at 720p, the deluxe cabinet monitors are 32 inches and will output at 720p as well.
Changes:
- Animations have been changed for every character.
- Stages are connected, sometimes through levels, meaning that characters can be knocked through walls and floors.
- Character customization is far more detailed than in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. There are items corresponding to different parts of the body, and you can swap tops/bottoms from each of the various costumes, as well as substitute alternate options. There are many customizations that are common to all characters (glove less and shoeless, caps, star-shaped sunglasses, etc.)and various character-specific items. In late December 2007, custom colors were introduced as part of Tekken 6's Winter Campaign in Japan.
- All characters have an “item move”, as seen at the AOU trailer. Although not all of them will have the same effectiveness. Specific items must be equipped when customizing a character in order to use the move.
- There is a "rage system" where the lower one's health is, the more damage is dealt with each hit.
- So far, Yoshimitsu has gone under the most drastic change. Harada notes that it will be much more difficult to use Yoshimitsu this time around, and they consider him an “Expert” character. Part of his story includes the fact that his sword is now losing power, and he must take a new fighting style, Kenjutsu from the Manji clan, this includes both dual sword fighting and pure fist fighting.
- A lot of Lei Wulong’s laying down stances have been changed. They look more like Shun Di’s laying down stance from Virtua Fighter 5. They also changed the properties where Lei can be counter-hit and juggled out of his laying down stances.
- Many changes were done to Marshall Law. It is noted that fans of Bruce Lee and those that know of Jeet Kune Do will be very pleased.
- Minor changes have been made to the move lists of all the characters. This includes additions of new moves and losses of others such as Heihachi Mishima's Twin Pistons (d/f+1,2). In some cases, a move may simply have a new command.
- The universal low parry no longer guarantees a launch.
- All jabs are now universally 10 frames except Ganryu's whose jab is still 12 frames([1]).
- Some returning characters have new player 1 and/or player 2 costumes; others have minor changes to their original costumes. (eg. Xiaoyu's 1P outfit was originally pink but in Tekken Dark Resurrection and Tekken 6, it is orange. Most returning characters have regained the original colors to their Player 1 and/or Player 2 outfits from Tekken 5 and did not keep their default palette swapped outfits from Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. Tekken 6 might have 4 costumes for each character as shown in the latest gameplay videos. Note Xiaoyu, Nina, Anna, Hwoarang (wears his in his cg art) and Julia have new player 2 Outfits. Jin, Devil Jin and Yoshimitsu have new Player 1 and Player 2 Outfits, Jin however, is the only character to have both of his outfits on displayed seperately in his individual arcade and console cg art images.
- Newly unveiled is the “bounce” effect used in juggles. Normally after moves that knock the opponent down in juggles and they can not tech roll, a new “bounce” comes into play. For example, Kazuya Mishima can now do f,N,d~d/f+2, f,N,d~d/f+2, 1, f+4 (this move causes the opponent to bounce off of the floor), f,N,d,D/F+4,1.
- Three new KO animations have been added. High-hit KOs will have the character fall to their knees and roll onto their backs. Mid-hit KOs will now cause the opponent to jacknife forwards, clutching at their gut, before falling backwards to lie on their back, ending with their legs bent. Low-hit KOs will have the character lose balance on one leg, roll to the ground holding the injured leg.
- Some characters have had their fighting stances changed. Some have been changed greatly, while others have only been changed slightly. Those characters are Bruce Irvin, Lei Wulong, Marshall Law, Nina Williams, and Yoshimitsu.
- The health bar has been made longer, due to the increased damage potential.
- A number of characters have had their voices and / or their sounds changed.
- Tekken 6 is the first game since Tekken 2 to show you a unique picture of the final two bosses before the actual fight. Tekken 2 did this with Kazuya Mishima and Devil, while Tekken 6 shows Jin Kazama and Azazel. It is also the third game to implement the character selection action, the two previous games being Tekken and Tekken Tag Tournament.

Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion is an updated version of the arcade Tekken 6. It was officially announced on August 28th, 2008. The game was released on arcades in December 2008. The console versions (PS3, Xbox 360, PSP) are based on this update.
The official trailer was shown at the AM Show on September 18th, 2008 in Tokyo, Japan. It is similar to the Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection upgrade for Tekken 5, although it was also released on consoles and not only arcades. The tagline, as shown in the most recent trailers, is "What do you fight for". The official trailer was shown at the AM Show on September 18th, 2008 in Tokyo, Japan. ([5]).
On April 28, 2009, it was confirmed that Tekken 6 will be coming to the PlayStation Portable console. It will be released alongside the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. It contains additional stages, content items, and an ad-hoc multiplayer mode using "original" and "fan favorite" characters. It will also have a "Ghost" Infrastructure mode, to allow players to upload his or her character data, as well as download the data of other players. This version will include all of the updates made in Bloodline Rebellion, as well. It does include 3 new stages selectable only in the aforementioned ad-hoc multiplayer mode, based mostly in stages found in Scenario Campaign Mode for the console ports.
Features
Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion features two new characters, Alisa Bosconovitch, who is the creation of Doctor Geppetto Boskonovitch ([6]), and Lars Alexandersson, who is described as a "strange foreigner" ([7]).
Many new things, other than the two new characters, are also being introduced with Bloodline Rebellion, such as several new stages (currently six), customization items (including what is referred to as Character Dressup, allowing new "Item Move" features), and an all-new feature that allows the player to customize the hair of the characters, such as hairstyles and hair colors; in other words you can literally make your own hairstyle for each character. Furthermore, Namco has attempted to balance out the characters, as several characters (most notably Bob) were considered much too overpowered in Tekken 6 ([8]).
From Tekken 6 to Bloodline Rebellion, the Tekken-Net ID cards that have ranks below red (from the "Conqueror" rank and below) get reset back to "1st DAN". However, the ones that have ranks above red remain the same ([9]).
Additionally, there exists a golden version of the game's final boss, Azazel. To reach it, you must play arcade mode without retrying to properly reach it. Also, Azazel's color changes to red/orange when it gets low on health, as seen in the official trailer (at 3:09 - 3:12).
The game's bonus boss, Nancy-MI847J, does not appear to have received a design change. However, it appears to take less damage from attacks now. In the console version, it is playable on the second stage of "Scenario Campaign".
As of Wednesday, December 3, 2008, in an interview with Katsuhiro Harada, it was revealed that Namco / Namco-Bandai is "considering" including console-specific characters for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. ([10] and [11]).
Also, there are new "Item Move" features for some of the characters like Lili, Xiaoyu, and other characters.
A new mode, "Scenario Campaign", will be in the console versions of the game. It can be played alone, with others, and online. Similar to the Tekken Force side game in Tekken 3, Tekken 4, Tekken 5's Devil Within, the fighters go through certain areas and defeat all opposing enemies, first was start from Lars and his robot partner Alisa as the first playable characters at this mode.
They have added new Console-Exclusive Outfits for specific characters.
Limited Edition
There will also be a limited edition for both Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The bundle includes the Tekken 6 game, limited edition wireless fight stick crafted by Hori (a black one for the Playstation 3 and a white one for the Xbox 360) and collectible Art book. Story
The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 came to a close. The final battle was against the sponsor of the tournament, Jinpachi Mishima, and Jin Kazama. Jin Kazama came away as the victor.
Becoming the president of the Mishima Zaibatsu, Jin immediately began various programs within the company and converted the Tekkenshu into a spy project. People began to suspect a darkness in Jin, leading to increased tension, infighting, and finally a full-scale war. The whole world was drawn in, and when the nations began losing power, the Zaibatsu, able to gain a profit from the potential of war, announced its independence and declared war on the entire world.
Initially, the Mishima Zaibatsu was a formidable enemy, but then G Corporation rose to the position of the main opposition to the Zaibatsu. The world saw the rival company as the savior, and endorsed them completely in their drive to suppress the Zaibatsu. Eventually, G Corporation announced that the president of the Mishima Zaibatsu was the root cause of the war, and promises an immense amount of money to anyone who can capture Jin Kazama alive. G Corporation's current chairman and CEO, Kazuya Mishima, took over the company after killing all those within it who betrayed him just after The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5.
But, almost as if anticipating this move, the Mishima Zaibatsu announced the opening of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6. People may enter to gain fame, money and revenge. In the midst of this chaos, the curtains rise on The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6.
Scenario Campaign
Dark Hero Transformed to Fearful Villain Following his victory in the previous tournament, Jin Kazama, the new King of Iron Fist, has taken charge of the Mishima Zaibatsu and now appears to possess tyrannical ambitions. Using his resources within the organization to become a global superpower, he severs the Mishima Zaibatsu's national ties and openly declares war against all nations. This action plunges the world into an extremely chaotic spiral, with a huge-scale civil war erupting around the globe and even amidst the space colonies orbiting the planet. His biological father, Kazuya Mishima, is aware of this and finds Jin's interference in his own plans for global domination to be a nuisance. Now in charge of G Corporation, having usurped the company following its previous leaders' failure to use and then dispose of him, Kazuya is seen as the only force who could oppose Jin and places a bounty on Jin's head for anyone who can capture him. Jin's response is announcing The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6 in order to battle Kazuya and crush G Corporation.
Sudden Memory Loss Meanwhile, among the ranks of the Tekken Force, a young soldier named Lars Alexandersson has begun a rebellion to slowly dismantle the Mishima Zaibatsu and G Corporation in order to put an end to the war. During an operation, Lars stumbles across a sleeping female cyborg, identifying her as Alisa Bosconovitch. G Corporation forces soon attack, starting a fight and causing an explosion that kills almost everyone present at the scene and leaves Lars with amnesia. Lars escapes with Alisa and the two begin a journey to discover their origins, meeting and fighting several previous Tekken characters. Jin, along with his top subordinates, Nina and Eddy, learns this and issues a manhunt for Lars.
Its All Coming Back During the journey, Lars reunites with his lieutenant, Tougou, and the two keep in touch.Tougou tells Lars that he had some connection with Heihachi Mishima, now living in solitude but still plotting to retake the Zaibatsu from Jin. Lars locates and confronts Heihachi, and manages to defeat him. Lars suddenly recovers from amnesia. Much to Heihachi's surprise, he finds out he has another son. Lars prepares to kill Heihachi, but relents at the last minute and leaves, turning down Heihachi's proposal that they work together to defeat Jin. Lars eventually comes into contact with Lee Chaolan, who serves as an aid and contact for Lars after Lars rescues Lee's friend, Julia Chang, from a G Corporation facility. At the same time, Kazuya hears of Lars's exploits and sends his men to kill him.
A New Begining Lars and Alisa's journey eventually leads them to G Corporation, where they are confronted by a squadron of armed soldiers. Tougou and his men arrive to provide back-up for Lars while Lars and Alisa confront and defeat Anna. Once they encounter Kazuya, they engage him in combat. They manage to defeat him but he escapes after the fight. Afterward, Lars and Alisa manage to escape, but Tougou is killed in battle, and Lars vows to avenge him. They then hijack a Zaibatsu subway train to get to the Mishima Zaibatsu's Central Tower, although they are ambushed along the way by Nina and a squadron of Tekken Forces. Despite the odds, Lars defeats the soldiers and kicks Nina off the train. Once they reach the tower they are encountered by Nancy. Raven quickly appears and quickly saves them from Nancy, helping them escape.
Climax Of Unfinished Business Lars and Alisa reach the tower and confront Jin and fight him. Nina who survived the fall appeared. In a plot twist, Jin reboots Alisa's memory bank and sets her on Lars, revealing that she was built the whole time to protect him and that he has been using her to monitor Lars's actions, although the G Corporation attack was not part of Jin's plan. Lars fights and manages to defeat Alisa, who flees the scene. Raven suddenly arrives, having been tailing Lars and Alisa throughout their journey, and offers help, as he saw Jin heading for the desert. Lars accepts.
A Cursed Blood Lars and Raven locate an abandoned temple in the middle of the desert, said to be the home of the demon known as Azazel, or the Rectifier. Inside the temple, Lars and Raven find and confront Kazuya once again, Kazuya learning, to his disgust, that Lars is his half-brother. After the fight, Kazuya leaves the temple with Anna. Lars and Raven reach the heart of the temple and locate Azazel. During the fight, Azazel tells Lars that he is merely a creation of man, and that it is time for him to destroy humanity to make them atone for their sins, but as he is too injured to continue fighting, Azazel apparently self-destructs. Lars and Raven flee the temple as it collapses.
A Thrilling Fight Once outside, they are confronted by Jin once again. Lars makes an attempt to attack Jin but Alisa comes in the way in order to protect him. Lars and Raven defeat Alisa, who reverts to her old self and shares a brief, tearful reunion with Lars before expiring. Jin insults Alisa. Lars, realizing that he fell in love, gets enraged and another fight ensues between Jin and Lars. After lots of effort Lars comes away as the victor.
Not So Evil After All It is then that Jin finally reveals his intentions: having known about Azazel for a long time since Zafina's story, Jin knew that the only way to awaken Azazel was to fill the world with negative emotions, and the best way was starting a war. Jin also tells Lars that he never appreciated how the people of the world had to live under the oppressive rule of governments and greedy corporations, and by starting the war, those powers would crumble into nothing, and the world would finally see freedom and peace. Azazel is not yet dead, and can only be destroyed by someone who carries the Devil Gene. Once the beast was defeated, Jin could kill his own inner demons by freeing himself of the Devil Gene. Indeed, Azazel, now much stronger, suddenly erupts from the rubble, but Jin, powering himself up with the Devil Gene, approaches Azazel, immune to his attacks, and punches his fist straight through the beast's chest, sending the both of them plummeting to their apparent deaths. Nina appears and shares a brief conversation with Lars, declaring that she cannot be the judge of whether Jin's actions were right or wrong.
Dead or Alive Lars and Raven take Alisa's body to Lee, who promises to repair her as soon as possible. Lars bids farewell to Raven. Lars then receives a call offering him a new job. The phone conversation is left a mystery. A post-credits scene shows that Raven and his colleagues have found Jin's half-buried body in the desert. Whether he is dead or alive is left ambiguous, although the latter is more likely, as the Devil Tattoo is still visible on Jin's arm, indicating that Azazel's demise has apparently not freed him of the Devil Gene.
Reception
Critical response to Tekken 6 has been mostly positive. The game currently holds a Metascore of 80 on Metacritic. IGN states that "While Tekken is not for everybody, Tekken 6 should appeal to a fairly wide variety of fighting game fans.", rating it at 8.8. IGN AU awarded the game a score of 9.0/10, and Gamespot awarded it an 8.5/10. Play UK gave Tekken 6 a 94 stating it as "an intense, tactical and utterly brilliant fighting game, perfect for anyone with even a fleeting interest in the genre".
Tekken 6 has nonetheless garnered some criticism for the excessive load times of the PlayStation 3-version when run without install and its previously laggy online multiplayer component. The lag in multiplayer, however, has been improved via patch by Namco Bandai Games. The game's Scenario Campaign mode was subject to criticism as well; IGN regarded the Scenario Campaign as a disappointment, citing bland environments and repetitive enemies.
As of May 2011, Tekken 6 has sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide.
Merchandise
On July 26, 2009, Namco Bandai announced that they would be collaborating with mixed martial arts apparel company TapouT. Because of this, TapouT shirts will be available as universal customization items in the console version of the game. Corresponding retail t-shirts will also be available for purchase ([12]).
Gameplay
Director Katsuhiro Harada (who also directed Tekken 5) said that Tekken 6 will retain all of the elements from Tekken 5 and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection that were well-received by fans. Harada also said that the stages will have more interactivity. Harada promised the greatest character count the series has ever seen, along with heavily customizable character costumes. Also, the character customization feature will be more involved with gameplay ([13]). A new game system is the "Rage System". The lower your lifebar, the more attack damage your character will do. There will also be collapsing stages, like in the "Dead or Alive" series ([14]). Tekken 6 will use the Octave Engine.
New Features include Bounce, Item Move and Rage.
