Introduction
Kazuya Mishima (三島 一八 Mishima Kazuya) is a character in Tekken and has been in every game except Tekken 3, when he was presumed dead. He was the protagonist of the first Tekken and is one of the main antagonists for the rest of the series, starting from Tekken 2. Kazuya Mishima is the son of Heihachi Mishima, who is the most that hosted the tournament. He is the grandson of Jinpachi Mishima and the father of Jin Kazama due to an unexplained relationship with Jun Kazama. He has a half-brother named Lars Alexandersson who he had been unaware of much of his life, finding out about him in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6. Lee Chaolan is his adoptive brother who Kazuya never liked and shared an intense rivalry with.
When Kazuya's name is written in Japanese, it's translated as 三島 一八(Mishima Kazuya) or みしま かずや(Mishima Kazuya). Kazuya gets 八(hachi or pachi or ya) from 平八(Heihachi) and followed 一(ichi or kazu) which means a beginning because he is the eldest son. The notation that 一八 is rare in Japan.
In the original entry to the Tekken franchise, Kazuya was considered to be the primary protagonist. And for all intents and purposes, there was no reason to believe differently. According to differing sources (such as Tekken: The Motion Picture and a brief scene in Ling Xiaoyu's Tekken 5 ending), Kazuya was actually quite frail, kind and timid as a boy and was the victim of years of abuse at the hands of Heihachi. Indeed, Kazuya originally entered the first Rave War/King of Iron Fist Tournament in order to face off against his father, who was played up to be a corrupt corporate tyrant. Kazuya's clothing of choice is simple white pants, red gloves and footpads. There was only one clue as to Kazuya's true intents and nature: His secret PS One palette swap, which turned out to be Devil.
Tekken 2 saw Kazuya's true nature revealed in full. After he believed his father was dead, instead of bringing justice to the Mishima Zaibatsu and righting the wrongs of his father, Kazuya repeated the corrupt practices of his father and turned it into an even more ruthless organization. While Heihachi was merely ruthless, Kazuya acted absolutely without a conscience. He hired assassins to eliminate any of his critics or rivals (such as the father of Eddy Gordo), he attempted to extort money from several businesses and organizations, and he even smuggled endangered species and conducted genetic experiments on them (Alex and Roger).
Of course, the reason for his evil deeds was because he had allowed his hatred for Heihachi to consume him. Angel, an unknown entity, constantly battled with Devil to determine the actions of Kazuya. Heihachi managed to take advantage of his son's battle of personalities and defeated him in the second King of Iron First Tournament. Kazuya was then thrown into a volcano and nearly killed while the Devil Gene in his body escaped and eventually made contact with Kazuya's son Jin Kazama who succeeded his father as the series' new protagonist for the time being.
Before his downfall, Kazuya was protected by Bruce Irvin, Ganryu, and Anna Williams. He was also an assassination target for Nina Williams. He also became attracted to Jun Kazama; he said in his own words "she was so mysterious." This attraction lead to the birth of his only son, Jin Kazama.
Kazuya is generally a cold-blooded and brutal man who has a harsh way of dealing with things. He is also extremely arrogant and his coldheartedness is complemented by his large ego and self-righteousness. Since his original appearance, Kazuya's character has gone through many transformations: from hero, to villain, to anti-hero and back again. Whatever was left of his good side appears to be totally suppressed by his Devil persona. Kazuya no longer fights against his darker side and the two seem to have come to mutual terms, as Kazuya can transform into Devil when he chooses (such as in the Tekken 5 introduction). This is one of the main factors that makes him well known amongst Tekken fans.
His title in the original trilogy is Cold Blooded Leader.

- Ending "Evil Smile" (Unofficial Synopsis)

Kazuya stares at Heihachi, who is standing up and not moving very much for a moment before smiling. Kazuya grabs his father and uses him as a human shield to block Devil's blasts, and once he gets close, he throws Heihachi's lifeless body at Devil, distracting him. When Devil turns around, Kazuya hits Devil with a Dragon Uppercut, effectively knocking him out. Kazuya then smiles victoriously.
Trivia
- The exact nature of the intimate relationship between Kazuya and Jun has been left rather ambiguous. Many fans like to believe that some degree of love and mutual attraction was involved, however, these ideas are often based on non-canon storyline such as Tekken Tag Tournament or Tekken: The Motion Picture. The canon games describe Jun as being "mysteriously drawn to Kazuya". Namco describes both characters as to "drawn to one another".
- In Tekken 2, Kazuya's stage is "Darkness Temple".

- In-Game Text
- The tournament officials sent Kazuya a message: The winner of Round 7 by default is Kazuya Mishima. Please proceed to the final stage. Though Kazuya sensed Heihachi's hand in Jin Kazama's disappearance, a fearless grin crept upon his face as he headed towards the final stage. Heihachi led Kazuya deep within the Mishima Zaibatsu compound. A massive temple stood in the midst of a forest enshrouded in fog. The two entered the building...
- Ending, "Fin Kazuya" (Unofficial Synopsis)

Jin awakes with the intention to kill him but is defeated by Kazuya. Kazuya then stands over his son's fallen body and absorbs his devil gene, becoming complete once again. An arrogant and brutal man, he has fought countless times against his father, Heihachi, and his son, Jin. Kazuya seeks to use Pandora to strengthen the devil power within him so that he can wrestle control of the Mishima Zaibatsu away from Jin.
Story (In-Game Text)
From information obtained by the G Corporation, Kazuya learns that Pandora's box possesses incredible power. He now believes that by using the power of the box, the Devil Gene can now be amplified. With that he can now defeat his son, Jin, and take control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. As he plots Nina appears...
Kazuya: Now there's a face I haven't seen for a while
An assassin unrivaled in strength and well-versed in the movements of the Mishima Zaibatsu, Nina Williams has been hired by Kazuya to help him obtain Pandora in exchange for a vast sum of money. The woman who had once been ordered to assassinate Kazuya, now works in the shadows with him, as he begins his journey for the box.
Nina: Spare me the small talk I'm only here for the job.
Kazuya: Of course. And until that job is completed you will do exactly as you're told.

Trivia
- His title is "Controller of the Devil".
- He appears to be capable of firing Devil Beams in his normal form without fully transforming into Devil, in his super art, though he does briefly manifest black, aura-like energy wings.
- His Devil Beam super art is a sort of opposite of Jin's version of the move. Kazuya strikes the opponent physically three times whilst Jin pelts the opponent with four energy spheres, and Kazuya fires a Devil Beam from the ground into the airborne opponent whilst Jin's has him fly into the air and blast the grounded opponent.
- His official partner is Nina. Their special intro has Kazuya command her to follow him, and she asks if they have to take their opponents alive. Kazuya smirks and replies that, while its preferable, accidents do happen.
- Kazuya and Nina's rivals are Ryu and Ken.
- Kazuya's swap costume is a uniform of the United States Air Force that Guile works for. According to the download blurb, Kazuya infiltrated the USAF but something went awry and he was actually recruited.
- Kazuya beats SF character Dan Hibiki in the 1st trailer before challenging Ryu. SF director Yoshinori Ono later said that Kazuya had killed Dan with said beating.
Kazuya is featured in the free-to-play online game Tekken Revolution as one of the starting eight characters. As with the rest of the cast, his appearance and moveset are carried over directly from Tekken Tag Tournament 2. However, his lasers while in the Devil Transformation "stance" have been aesthetically changed, having now increased in size to more closely resemble Devil and Angel's beams in Tekken 2.

Trivia
- Kazuya is infamous for being a "beginner's choice" in this game, with the usage of his Special Art/Invincible in conjunction with Devil's lasers being the most notorious tactic of these players. To a lesser extent, they will also make use of his Roundhouse to Triple Spin Kick (u+4,4,4,4_u/f+4,4,4,4) for an easy mix-up.

Story (Unofficial Synposis)
- His father, Heihachi Mishima, threw him off of a cliff as a young boy to see if he could climb back up, as the lion cubs do. Kazuya survived, and during his arduous struggle back up the cliff, he swore to get revenge against his father. This hatred is the dominant force in his life. His entire existence has been spent preparing for this one act of violent revenge. As Kazuya was going to die, an evil spirit flowed through him. "Will you help me?" Kazuya asked. "Yes, in exchange for your soul." the spirit spoke. Kazuya answered yes and the spirit bonded with him. 16 years later, a research team called WWWC had been searching for a boy fallen off a cliff (which was Kazuya). The first researcher to find Kazuya was Jun Kazama, who successfully stopped him from getting revenge on Heihachi. Jun is shown to be impregnated by Kazuya during the conclusion of the movie.
Story (Unofficial Synposis) Kazuya appears in the Tekken Movie as one of the main antagonists. In the film he tries to kill Jin Kazama and betray his father, Heihachi Mishima and take control once and for all. Years before the main story, Kazuya rapes and abuses Jun Kazama who then gives birth to Jin. During the Final battle of the tournament he is ultimately defeated and almost killed by his son, Jin.
Kazuya will be featured in the Tekken movie called Tekken: Blood Vengeance.

Character Trivia
- Kazuya appears in the Tekken 3 arcade opening, alongside Jun Kazama (who both had cameo appearances) and Jin Kazama.

Also, their physical appearance, most noticeably their hair styles, are similar also. Namco has however neither confirmed nor denied that this was a homage or even intentional.
- Kazuya's sub-bosses include Lee Chaolan, Roger, Heihachi Mishima, and Raven.
- Before the release of Tekken 3, many Tekken fans believed that the early sketches of Jin Kazama were Kazuya Mishima in his teen years, due to their similarities.
- Kazuya is one of four characters to be playable in all but one Tekken game, the others being Lei, Lee and Anna.
