Introduction

Yoshimitsu (吉光) was originally introduced in Tekken. Due to his unique look and fighting style he has proven popular amongst fans and he has returned for all subsequent sequels, becoming one of only four characters to do so, the others are Paul Phoenix, Nina Williams, and Heihachi Mishima. Additionally, an analogous character bearing the same name, weapon, clan, and background was later carried over into Namco’s Soul Series of fighting games, making his debut in Soul Calibur and once again returning for all of the sequels. This has led fans to speculate about the connection between the two series and the history of the character. Yoshimitsu is one of the most recognisable characters outside of the series even with his ever changing appearance, becoming a Namco Bandai staple.

Yoshimitsu was one of only two characters to carry a weapon in Tekken, the other being Kunimitsu. Though Kunimitsu got the chance to actually use it in gameplay in Tekken 2. In Tekken 6 he gains a second sword and a drastic change in gameplay. Based from win quotes in Street Fighter X Tekken the curse of his sword seems to be of some renown since many fighters such as Jin, Kazuya, Ryu and Akuma all seem to know the curse of his sword while some fighters like Hwoarang also sense supernatural powers within it.

Yoshimitsu's most popular design seems to be his Tekken 3 default outfit, as it has appeared in the most games: Tekken 3, Tekken Tag Tournament, Tekken Advance, and Street Fighter X Tekken. The outfit was also used as the design for Yoshimitsu in the 2010 live action Tekken film.

His title in the original trilogy is Mechanized Space Ninja.

Gameplay

Yoshimitsu's fighting style incorporates a blend of ninjutsu, sword attacks, and special stances. In addition to performing slashes with his sword and using it to impale his opponent, he can now rotate it with his mechanical left hand in a windmill manner (he can also use this method to fly). Another use of his sword is in "Harakiri" moves, where he impales himself and his opponent with it, damaging them both. He has many stances. One is "Meditation", where he turns his back to his opponent and heals himself. A variation of this is "Indian Stance", where he heals himself while sitting Indian style. Another of his stances is "Manji Dragonfly", where he rotates his sword and his mechanical left hand to levitate in midair. He also has a "Flea" stance, where he stands on his sword by placing the tip into the ground and wrapping his hands and feet around the hilt.

Tekken 6 screenshot: Yoshimitsu VS Yoshimitsu

Gameplay

Yoshimitsu has gone under the most drastic change regarding his play style, compared to the other characters. The canon explanation for this is that his sword is now losing power, forcing him to use a new fighting style, Kenjutsu from the Manji clan; this includes both dual sword fighting and pure fist fighting. Yoshimitsu's sword attacks used to be unblockable, however, in Tekken 6, some of them can actually be blocked ([1] [2]).

Story

Prologue (In-Game Text)

By killing evil doers and villains the sword would retain its power, otherwise the cursed sword will make the user go insane. Yoshimitsu realizes that he can no longer use his old sword and decides to use another blade called Fumaken, that seals the properties of the cursed sword. He then decides to enter The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6.
Ending Description
Yoshimitsu defeats Azazel and retrieves the last remnant from his body, an orb. As Yoshimitsu surveys it, the orb begins to levitate then circles around him and merges with his sword. It's great power begins corrupting the sword and poisoning Yoshimitsu. Yoshimitsu has succumbed to his cursed blade and slashes the great temple in half.

Waiting for Yoshimitsu in the gloom was a charming young martial artist. Yoshimitsu couldn't say for sure, but he thought he seemed a little "tense...". Though his looks were enchanting, he also seemed dangerous, so Yoshimitsu braced himself for battle.

If he kept going as he was, there was a chance the sword may have left him to seek another owner and gone on a rampage of death. In order to prevent this, Yoshimitsu attained the Fuumaken, a sword with the ability to contain evil. At the same time, in order to return the Spirit Sword's energy to normal, he joined The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6, where evil energy was collected.

Gary Stearns as Yoshimitsu.

"Yoshimitsu. Master swordsman. A true samurai warrior." - Kazuya

Story (Unofficial Synopsis)

Yoshimitsu is featured in the live-action Tekken movie as one of the Iron Fist tournament's competitors, portrayed by actor and stuntman Gary Stearns. He is pitted against Jin Kazama in the tournament. To make it more of a fair fight, Jin is allowed to use a weapon of his own, a naginata. After eventually disarming one another, Yoshimitsu goes berserk on Jin, hitting him with numerous punches and kicks. Having Jin floored, Yoshimitsu retrieves his sword and prepares to finish him off. However, a distraction caused by Heihachi lashing out against Kazuya's takeover and activating a security alert allows Jin to recall training advice from his mother ("Destroy the mask of death, and you will see there is nothing behind it to fear."), which gives him the strength to counter Yoshimitsu's offense and deliver a powerful right-handed strike directly to his face, securing a victory for Jin and nearly killing Yoshimitsu. Despite his loss, Yoshimitsu is shown to have done serious damage to Jin, temporarily dislocating his left shoulder and leaving Christie and Steve to carry him out of the arena together when The Jackhammers are detaining the Iron Fist fighters. This fight serves as inspiration for Kazuya to make the rest of the tournament's fights under his command "to the death".

Trivia

  • Like in Tekken 1, Yoshimitsu seems to be completely human in this film.
  • His mask appears to be based off his Tekken 3 incarnation.
  • During his battle with Jin, one of the announcers calling the action credits Yoshimitsu with being a past Iron Fist champion, although in the games, Yoshimitsu has yet to win any of the tournaments.
