Kazuya Mishima (三島 一八 Mishima Kazuya) is a character in Tekken and has been in every game except Tekken 3, when he was presumed dead. He was the protagonist of the first Tekken and is one of the main antagonists for the rest of the series, starting from Tekken 2. Kazuya Mishima is the son of Heihachi and Kazumi Mishima He is the grandson of Jinpachi Mishima and the father of Jin Kazama due to an unexplained relationship with Jun Kazama. He has a half-brother named Lars Alexandersson who he had been unaware of much of his life, finding out about him in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 6. Lee Chaolan is his adoptive brother who Kazuya never liked and shared an intense rivalry with.

When Kazuya's name is written in Japanese, it's translated as 三島 一八(Mishima Kazuya) or みしま かずや(Mishima Kazuya). Kazuya gets 八(hachi or pachi or ya) from 平八(Heihachi) and followed 一(ichi or kazu) which means a beginning because he is the eldest son. The notation that 一八 is rare in Japan.

In the original entry to the Tekken franchise, Kazuya was considered to be the primary protagonist. And for all intents and purposes, there was no reason to believe differently. According to differing sources (such as Tekken: The Motion Picture and a brief scene in Ling Xiaoyu's Tekken 5 ending), Kazuya was actually quite frail, kind and timid as a boy and was the victim of years of abuse at the hands of Heihachi. Indeed, Kazuya originally entered the first Rave War/King of Iron Fist Tournament in order to face off against his father, who was played up to be a corrupt corporate tyrant. Kazuya's clothing of choice is simple white pants, red gloves, and footpads. There was only one clue as to Kazuya's true intents and nature: His secret PS One palette swap, which turned out to be Devil.

Tekken 2 saw Kazuya's true nature revealed in full. After he believed his father was dead, instead of bringing justice to the Mishima Zaibatsu and righting the wrongs of his father, Kazuya repeated the corrupt practices of his father and turned it into an even more ruthless organization. While Heihachi was merely ruthless, Kazuya acted absolutely without a conscience. He hired assassins to eliminate any of his critics or rivals (such as the father of Eddy Gordo), he attempted to extort money from several businesses and organizations, and he even smuggled endangered species and conducted genetic experiments on them (Alex and Roger).

Of course, the reason for his evil deeds was because he had allowed his hatred for Heihachi to consume him. Angel, an unknown entity, constantly battled with Devil to determine the actions of Kazuya. Heihachi managed to take advantage of his son's battle of personalities and defeated him in the second King of Iron First Tournament. Kazuya was then thrown into a volcano and nearly killed while the Devil Gene in his body escaped and eventually made contact with Kazuya's son Jin Kazama who succeeded his father as the series' new protagonist for the time being.

Before his downfall, Kazuya was protected by Bruce Irvin, Ganryu, and Anna Williams. He was also an assassination target for Nina Williams. He also became attracted to Jun Kazama; he said in his own words "she was so mysterious." This attraction led to the birth of his only son, Jin Kazama.

Kazuya is generally a cold-blooded and brutal man who has a harsh way of dealing with things. He is also extremely arrogant and his cold-heartedness is complemented by his large ego and self-righteousness. Since his original appearance, Kazuya's character has gone through many transformations: from hero to villain, to anti-hero and back again. Whatever was left of his good side appears to be totally suppressed by his Devil persona. Kazuya no longer fights against his darker side and the two seem to have come to mutual terms, as Kazuya can transform into Devil when he chooses (such as in the Tekken 5 introduction). This is one of the main factors that makes him well known amongst Tekken fans.

His title in the original trilogy is Cold Blooded Leader.

  • Wild Card uses Kazuya's model.

Prologue (Manual)
After defeating his father, Heihachi Mishima, and throwing his lifeless body from a cliff (as Heihachi did to his son previously) Kazuya appointed himself the new head of the Mishima Zaibatsu. After 2 years had passed, Kazuya organized the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2.
Ending "Evil Smile" (Unofficial Synopsis)
Kazuya Mishima defeats Devil in a brutal battle. Disgusted that he could have trusted someone so weak with his life, and impressed with himself in the sense that he defeated a supposed powerful being, Kazuya simply walks away. Devil, however, regains consciousness, and he tries to kill Kazuya with an eye beam, but Heihachi takes the blast in an attempt to save his son. Kazuya stares at Heihachi, who is standing up and not moving very much for a moment before smiling. Kazuya grabs his father and uses him as a human shield to block Devil's blasts, and once he gets close, he throws Heihachi's lifeless body at Devil, distracting him. When Devil turns around, Kazuya hits Devil with a Dragon Uppercut, effectively knocking him out. Kazuya then smiles victoriously.

  • The exact nature of the intimate relationship between Kazuya and Jun has been left rather ambiguous. Many fans like to believe that some degree of love and mutual attraction was involved, however, these ideas are often based on non-canon storyline such as Tekken Tag Tournament or Tekken: The Motion Picture. The canon games describe Jun as being "mysteriously drawn to Kazuya". Namco describes both characters as to "drawn to one another".
  • In Tekken 2, Kazuya's stage is "Darkness Temple".

Prologue (In-Game Text)
20 years ago after losing to his father Heihachi in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, Kazuya was thrown in a mouth of a volcano. A few days later, G Corporation, a biotech firm making revolutionary advances in the field of biogenetics researches brought him back to life, with G Corporation's aid Kazuya investigated the biomechanics of the devil gene within him by subjecting himself to various experiments. Kazuya believed that once he unlocked the power of the devil gene he would be powerful enough to defeat his father and destroy the Mishima Zaibatsu. 20 years later the Tekken Forces attacked G Corporation and stole their data, Kazuya was also targeted in the fight. Then Kazuya learns of the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 which was a trap by Heihachi to lure him out. Despite this knowledge Kazuya enters the tournament knowing that this is his chance.
Kazuya is shown from behind, his arms crossed. As the camera zooms around to show his face, he utters a short scowl and glares over his right shoulder (though, in his P2 outfit, the latter detail will be hidden by his sunglasses). This will be shown in either the Building or Laboratory stage, depending on which one Kazuya has not already fought an opponent in.
In-Game Text
The tournament officials sent Kazuya a message: The winner of Round 7 by default is Kazuya Mishima. Please proceed to the final stage. Though Kazuya sensed Heihachi's hand in Jin Kazama's disappearance, a fearless grin crept upon his face as he headed towards the final stage. Heihachi led Kazuya deep within the Mishima Zaibatsu compound. A massive temple stood in the midst of a forest enshrouded in fog. The two entered the building...
Ending, "Fin Kazuya" (Unofficial Synopsis)
After defeating Heihachi in the King Of Iron Fist Tournament, he demands to see Jin (since Jin is being held captive). Kazuya is then taken to Honmaru and sees his son for the first time in his life, Moments later the Devil Gene takes over Kazuya and Devil Kazuya dispatches of Heihachi quickly and taunts Jin to unleash the devil gene with him. Jin awakens with the intention to kill him but is defeated by Kazuya. Kazuya then stands over his son's fallen body and absorbs his devil gene, becoming complete once again. Kazuya then transforms into Devil without the red eyes, signifying his control over the Devil gene.

  • Since Tekken 4, Kazuya has been voiced by Masanori Shinohara.
  • From Tekken 4 onwards, Kazuya's left iris has become permanently red.
  • Kazuya is the third stage boss for the Tekken Force mini-game. This stage is known as the "Corridor."
  • Because Kazuya Mishima was not featured in Tekken 3, many fans believed that Namco was going to kill off the character completely. By the time plans of a Tekken 4 was announced, this created a loud outcry amongst the fans, who wanted Kazuya to return to the series.

Ending, "Grandfather Knock-Out!" (Unofficial Synopsis)

Jinpachi awakes, and Kazuya smiles, with a flash of childhood memories flooding back (Jinpachi and Kazuya are said to have been close in Kazuya's early life). Kazuya, however, ruins the moment, when he evilly grins and kills his grandfather, thus turning him into dust. Then, Kazuya laughs.

  • Two of Kazuya's childhood memories were seen in Tekken 5. His special bonding with his grandfather Jinpachi Mishima seen in Kazuya's ending, and a few seconds before he was thrown into a ravine by his father Heihachi seen in Ling Xiaoyu's ending. The latter however, had a comical twist and is thus not entirely true.
  • Kazuya received a new win animation in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection in which he performs his Hell Lancer move, then the Glorious Demon God Fist move, while turning his head slightly and shouting, "Doryah!".
  • Kazuya's purple tuxedo makes a return as a selectable attire for him, with some alterations. The coat now has actual longer back tails and he wears a red undershirt.
  • In the opening movie, Kazuya is wearing his pants that have clouds and lightning. Instead of the ones that have gold, purple and red flame symbols

Prologue (In-Game Text)
After he had killed the G Corporation officials who betrayed him, Kazuya Mishima succeeded in taking control of the corporation from behind the scenes. In the meantime, the world was quickly slipping into chaos due to the activities of the Mishima Zaibatsu, led by Jin Kazama. Kazuya could never accept a world controlled by anyone but himself, and he set out to use the military power of the G Corporation to suppress the Mishima Zaibatsu. At this point, the G Corporation was praised by the nations of the world for its heroic actions. When the G Corporation's public influence had become great enough, Kazuya used it to announce a hefty bounty for anyone who could capture Jin alive. In reply, the Mishima Zaibatsu announced The King of Iron Fist Tournament 6. This was just as Kazuya had predicted, and it put a satisfied smile on his face.
Ending, "Reclaimed" (Unofficial Synopsis)
The Tekken Force surrounds the temple in an attempt to shoot whatever comes out. Then Kazuya emerges from the temple and lifted up the defeated Devil Jin for everyone to see. The Tekken Force then saluated Kazuya. Kazuya smiled and laugh evilly.
Scenario Campaign
Kazuya Mishima appears in the Scenario Campaign mode as one of the main antagonists. In Scenario Campaign mode, Lars defeats Kazuya twice. The last words Kazuya said to Lars was to warn him about the curse of the Mishima bloodline. He then walked off with his bodyguard Anna at his side.

  • In the "Gamescom" trailer for Bloodline Rebellion, Kazuya can be heard saying about, "It's the fate of our family to fight and betray each other. The Curse of The Mishima Bloodline"
  • Kazuya's final boss in Arena is Devil Jin. Additionally, his sub-boss is Heihachi Mishima.
  • His item move allows him to shoot lasers.
  • In the intro of Bloodline Rebellion his Player 2 outfit is white, but in the game it's purple.

Kazuya's CG-art in Tekken 7

Kazuya has received moves from both Devil Jin and Jinpachi, being able to access Devil Jin's "Demon Steel Pedal", and is able to use Jinpachi's "Elkeid" during the Devil transformation. It should be noted that Devil Kazuya's "Electric Wind Godfist" is now a mid instead of a high, but it still retains the same block frames as a standard "Wind Godfist".

Will be added.

  • Though Kazuya can still transform into Devil, his ability to do so has been limited down. His transformation now acts as an alternative to his Rage Art and will cause his rage to disappear after a successful transformation. Additionally, the transformation will not transfer after rounds like it did in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Tekken Revolution.

  • While playing as Kazuya with Devil as his partner, instead of tagging in and out the two will simply transform into each other. This will not occur if Angel is his partner.

Character Portrait: Kazuya, Street Fighter X Tekken
Kazuya vs Ryu

Kazuya Mishima is featured as a playable character in Street Fighter X Tekken, a crossover game between the Tekken and Street Fighter franchises.

Story (Official Site)

A cold-blooded killer who has awakened the power of the devil. Supporting the G corporation from behind the scenes, he works in secret to reacquire the Mishima Zaibatsu. An arrogant and brutal man, he has fought countless times against his father, Heihachi, and his son, Jin. Kazuya seeks to use Pandora to strengthen the devil power within him so that he can wrestle control of the Mishima Zaibatsu away from Jin.

Story (In-Game Text)

From information obtained by the G Corporation, Kazuya learns that Pandora's box possesses incredible power. He now believes that by using the power of the box, the Devil Gene can now be amplified. With that he can now defeat his son, Jin, and take control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. As he plots Nina appears...

Kazuya: Now there's a face I haven't seen for a while

An assassin unrivaled in strength and well-versed in the movements of the Mishima Zaibatsu, Nina Williams has been hired by Kazuya to help him obtain Pandora in exchange for a vast sum of money. The woman who had once been ordered to assassinate Kazuya, now works in the shadows with him, as he begins his journey for the box.

Nina: Spare me the small talk I'm only here for the job.

Kazuya: Of course. And until that job is completed you will do exactly as you're told.

Rival Battle

While Kazuya and Nina are walking, they notice Ken and Ryu. Though Nina says that they are simply punks Kazuya points out that for punks they have made a name for themselves.

As the pair walk towards Pandora Nina suddenly confronts Kazuya and tells him "someone else" needs Pandora more. Unsurprised he calls on G Corporation soldiers to attack her. Though Nina defeats all the soldiers and successfully escapes Kazuya is unfazed and approaches Pandora.

It is shown that Kazuya had successfully taken Pandora back to G Corporation with hopes of restoring the incomplete Devil Gene resting within him.

  • His title is "Controller of the Devil".
  • He appears to be capable of firing Devil Beams in his normal form without fully transforming into Devil, in his super art, though he does briefly manifest black, aura-like energy wings.
  • His Devil Beam super art is a sort of opposite of Jin's version of the move. Kazuya strikes the opponent physically three times whilst Jin pelts the opponent with four energy spheres, and Kazuya fires a Devil Beam from the ground into the airborne opponent whilst Jin's has him fly into the air and blast the grounded opponent.
  • His official partner is Nina. Their special intro has Kazuya command her to follow him, and she asks if they have to take their opponents alive. Kazuya smirks and replies that while it's preferable, accidents do happen.
  • Kazuya and Nina's rivals are Ryu and Ken.
  • Kazuya's swap costume is a uniform of the United States Air Force that Guile works for. According to the download blurb, Kazuya infiltrated the USAF but something went awry and he was actually recruited.
  • Kazuya beats SF character Dan Hibiki in the 1st trailer before challenging Ryu. SF director Yoshinori Ono later said that Kazuya had killed Dan with said beating.

Kazuya is featured in the free-to-play online game Tekken Revolution as one of the starting eight characters. As with the rest of the cast, his appearance and moveset are carried over directly from Tekken Tag Tournament 2. However, his lasers while in the Devil Transformation "stance" have been aesthetically changed, having now increased in size to more closely resemble Devil and Angel's beams in Tekken 2.

  • Kazuya is infamous for being a "beginner's choice" in this game, with the usage of his Special Art/Invincible in conjunction with Devil's lasers being the most notorious tactic of these players. To a lesser extent, they will also make use of his Roundhouse to Triple Spin Kick (u+4,4,4,4_u/f+4,4,4,4) for an easy mix-up.

His entire existence has been spent preparing for this one act of violent revenge. As Kazuya was going to die, an evil spirit flowed through him. "Will you help me?" Kazuya asked. "Yes, in exchange for your soul." the spirit spoke. Kazuya answered yes and the spirit bonded with him. 16 years later, a research team called WWWC had been searching for a boy fallen off a cliff (which was Kazuya). The first researcher to find Kazuya was Jun Kazama, who successfully stopped him from getting revenge on Heihachi. Jun is shown to be impregnated by Kazuya during the conclusion of the movie.

Character Trivia

  • Kazuya appears in the Tekken 3 arcade opening, alongside Jun Kazama (who both had cameo appearances) and Jin Kazama.
  • It is often believed that Kazuya is a homage to Dragonball Z's Vegeta character, since the two characters have many distinguishing similarities, in concern of their character traits, their attitudes, and their personalities. Also, their physical appearance, most noticeably their hair styles, are similar also. Namco has however neither confirmed nor denied that this was a homage or even intentional.
  • Before the release of Tekken 3, many Tekken fans believed that the early sketches of Jin Kazama were Kazuya Mishima in his teen years, due to their similarities.
  • Kazuya is one of four characters to be playable in all but one canonical Tekken game, the others being Lei, Lee, Marshall Law and Anna.
  • In a poll asking Tekken: Who is your favourite character? by DigitalSpy in September 2012, Kazuya was the tenth favourite (4% of votes), behind Marshall Law (4.2%) and ahead of Jun Kazama (3.3%).[1]
  • He, along with Heihachi, Xiaoyu, Panda and Alisa were all featured in a special Galaga video made by Namco for April Fools Day.
